I upgraded to VMware Fusion 3 yesterday. All went well, my Jackalope Linux virtual machine works fine. I want to install Windows 7 onto my Mac using a Virtual Machine. I put the DVD in the drive, the Mac recognized it. Launched Fusion and it saw the DVD and offered to install the operating system when I selected, File>New. I entered what I wanted for a password and the Windows Product Key, accepted the rest of the defaults and clicked Install, and that was it. The virtual machine window indicated a network boot I guess, something about DHCP and then the process ended with the message "No bootable device detected". The Windows install DVD was gone from the Mac desktop and the install stopped. Am I doing something wrong?

Actually my problem is with any CD not just windows 7. I can only install a VM from an image in the hard drive.

i just figured that out:
1. go to Settings
2. Advanced
3. select CD/DVD
4. click Restart

Nope, did not work for me. After following your steps, I still get "No bootable device was detected".

Cheers,

try to follow the reply to Rolvag post. by creating an .iso file and select that file for the boot up instead of the physical DVD

Where can I find that reply you are referring to?

Also, since I am new to Mac world, could you please tell me how to create ISO image from a DVD on a Mac computer? Or point me to instructions?

Thank you very much,

RJC

this is what I read in an earlier post for a similar issue "Try making an ISO of the disk and use the ISO to install. I've often encountered disk & drive combos that were finiky. Also, installing from ISO is usually faster" explanation on how to create an ISO file: http://benzwu.com/2009/03/29/creating-iso-in-os-x-leopard/. hope it works, good luck.

Hi All,

I've been having the same issue with my 27" iMac running VMware Fusion 3.0. I've been in contact with Customer Support and tried every option known to man without success. In the end, VMware admitted many users having the same issue. The work around as noted before is to create an ISO image of the operating system and store it somewhere on the hard drive, where VMware is able to access it during the install process. This does work, but the root cause still remain and has nothing to do with Windows 7. I had the same issue when trying to install Windows XP, Ubuntu and Vista.

Anyway, I suppose a pach is rapidly being developed to permanently resolve this issue. In the mean time creating an ISO image maybe the only option.

Regards

For some reason my MacPro sees the DVD just fine and the Win7 (upgrade) installer runs fine until it gets to the 'Where do you want to install Windows?" step, saying it needs the driver VMware SCSI controller.

I think this driver is included in VMware Tools, which are installed on the XP pro VM host. Any clues here? Nothing in VMW knowledgebase...

Has anyone installed the new Windows 7 with Fusion 3.0 on an IMAC 24", 3.06 and made it work? I have not purchased the Windows 7 yet nor upgraded to Fusion 3.0, but would like some assurances that the combination will work before investing time and money. Positive results are solicited.
