Problems Getting Vmware Server 2.01 To Work With Windows 7 Professional RTM 64Bit as Host - Solved posted: Oct 26, 2009 5:07 PM

I have been following the various discussions and haven't yet found a solution for my particular issue.

I have been successfully running Vmware Server 2.01 under Windows 7 RC1 Ultimate 64Bit as a host for several months.

Now that Windows 7 is official, I have purchased an Upgrade License of Windows 7 Professional as that will meet my needs.

Starting with a clean (custom) install, I have installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and after patching, the first thing I did was install Vmware Server 2.01 (trying both as myself and later as Administrator)

The installation works but after the reboot, the "Vmware Server Web Access" Service (Tomcat) fails to start. No amount of fiddling with hosts files nor any other suggestions I've seen out there SEEM to help....

What is odd though is after I did a complete restore back to my RC1, if I chose to do an UPGRADE to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (which kept all of my programs and settings), everything worked fine on the Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit system. My only delimma with that method is that my license key is for the Professional Verison, not Ultimate so I can't keep it indefinitely.

Thinking perhaps maybe it was just a configuration issue, I restored once again to RC1, and once again, did a custom (clean) install of Win 7 Pro 64bit and once again installed Vmware 2.01 and then copied all of the files under c:\windows.old\program files (x86)\vmware\vmware server on top of the 'new' install and did the same for the C:\windows.old\Users\All Users\VMware\VMware Server directory and rebooted....no difference.

Any ideas on how to get Vmware 2.01's Tomcat working under Windows 7 64bit RTM using a clean install?

Thanks!

Update: I fixed my own problem by following a suggestion I found on the internet to 'upgrade' my RC1 Ultimate to RTM Professional: http://www.unawave.de/installation/downgrade-en.html?lang=EN In a nutshell, I edited the registry on my RC1 Ultimate installation to 'fool' it into thinking it was an RC1 Professional and 'upgraded' to RTM Pro. The upgrade kept my files and settings and Vmware Server Continued to work after the upgrade process.
