Hello

When setting up a VMNic for VMotion, can I use another IP Address Class instead of the one used on the Service Console?

For example I use 10.0.1.1 for the Service Console can I use 192.168.1.1 for the VMotion VMNic

I am using ESX 3.5 U4

Thanks, maelito

Yes, you can. But there should be connectivity between VMkernel interfaces.

Yes, all VMkernel interfaces must have connectivity to each other to provide VMotion.

If you have dedictaed NICs just for VMotion then you should connect these NICs to gigabit switch. But of course you can leave this small LAN segment isolated, just for VMotion, with no connectivity to outer LAN

Hi Maelito,

Just to clarify your Service Console doesn't need to communicate to the VMotion port and YES you can have them on different subnets, networks, VLANs etc.

As long as the VMKernel NICs which are configured for VMotion can communicate to each other then you're ok. Service Console is independent of VMotion.

Hope that helps :)

"also u must have the same gateway on all the hosts...."

Isn't that stating the obvious?? ;)
