Is there any noticeable (performance) difference running:

PARAVIRTUALIZED GUEST:
1. 32bit guest on 64bit host with VT on
2. 64bit guest on 64bit host with VT on
3. 32bit guest on 64bit host with VT off
4. 64bit guest on 64bit host with VT off

COMPLETLY VIRTUALIZED GUEST:
5. 32bit guest on 64bit host with VT on
6. 64bit guest on 64bit host with VT on
7. 32bit guest on 64bit host with VT off
8. 64bit guest on 64bit host with VT off

To make comparison easier, let's make the host memory maximum 4GB
and everything running on ESXi 4.

Thank you

It depends on the guest but if you have VT available I would enable it. Do some testing. Report back

4. 64bit guest on 64bit host with VT off

64bit guest can not be run without VT

Hi,

I'm afraid you'll be wasting your time testing... unless you have a very specific use case.

As it is, if you enable VT on the host, then VMware will use it for guests who really benefit from it (or require it like 64 bit guests) and will use BT for guests who don't need it. The defaults change depending on the guest OS type that you choose during setup.

Here's a link to how this roughly works: Virtual Machine Monitor Execution Modes: in VMware vSphere 4.0

PS: I know you are on ESX3.5, but it is the same thing down there, except some defaults have changed there.

Not sure, 32 bit is fast enough, PAE still works and 32bit guests have a bit less memory overhead.
