Hi everyone,

I have read numerous article about extending space on ESXI (free version) and i just cant seem to figure this out. (i am almost at a stage were i may submitted to mental hospital due to this issue!)

Basically, i am doing a sharepoint in-place upgrade, before i do, i take a snapshot (just so i can revert back if things go wrong).

  • My windows Parttion size is 100GB to support this upgrade,(as it expands the database of SQL server in upgrade process etc) currently its used about 30GB of the 100GB

  • My ESXi Storage Datastore1 where this SQL resides is 131GB or there about, and has 24.91 GB free.

  • my upgrade keeps failing due to this message which have read many posts but cant seem to figure or understand the term used to explain or do things - msg.hbacommon.outofspace:

PLEASE can someone help me in layman term (in steps) as to how to fix this, i have installed ESXI as a default and not made changes. i am completely new to this and trying to make sense of LUN etc...

See attached file for screen dumps!

Thankyou very much!

On a different note, have you done a shrink on your sharepoint database?

Thanks,
Neil

Refresh the storage space view. Right click on the datastore and Refresh. Make sure the freespace is actually free. How big is the snapshot?

You don't have much room and it isn't hard to believe the update could add 22GB of change to the snapshot delta files. Make a copy of the VMDK to another location and don't use a snapshot beforehand.

I was suggesting that you NOT take a snapshot before you practice your update. The snapshot files could easily take up the 22GB space when you are performing the update. So copy off the VMDK to somewhere else to so you have a backup. The only way to shrink the disk would be to clone the disk to a smaller size. You can do that with the Standalone Converter or from the command line using vmkfstools command. The Converter is a much safer method.
