Hi there,

I have two ESX hosts (Dell PE2950 servers) connected to a Dell MD3000i iSCSI SAN. All going well however I wanted to connect another LUN to share between the hosts however I am unable to add another iSCSI software initiator on either ESX host. All the documentation I read states that you are limited to just one software initiator on ESX 3.5, is this correct? Should I purchase the below iSCSI HBA being a hardware initiator so I can connect to more iSCSI storage (and get better performance)?

Any help appreciated.

If you are using ESX - as long as both the Service Console and vmkernel are able to get to the new iscsi device then you should be able to add the new scsi device -

check this link to help you with MD3000i configuration: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/md3000i_esx_deploy_guide.pdf

I don't have MD3000i but I have Dell Equallogic; with one software iSCSI initiator on ESX servers you can connect to multiple luns on your SAN.

All you have to do is to setup the access list on your Lun to accept connection from your ESX iSCSI Qualified Name.

I agree if you use Hardware HBA you will get a better performance but you don't have to use Hardware HBA.

If you have (as I hope) a MD3000i with two controller, you have to build two different networks (as explained on MD3000i documentation) and give to each controller an unique IP of each networks.
Also on ESX side you need two adapters, one on each networks.
If you use software initiator build 2 vSwitches with one physical NIC and one vmkernel interface.
Finally add all four IP target of the MD3000i.

Hello,

ESX v3.x supports a limited subset of iSCSI HBAs, ESX v4.0 supports a few more. Verify that HBA is on the HCL before purchasing.

As for connectivity with the software initiator, AndreTheGiant has a workable solution. For ESX v3.x the SC must participate in the iSCSI network. This is not true for v4.0 however.
