I recently upgraded my ESXi 3.5 host to run the new ESXi 4 to get the USB support. I would like to attach a USB external hard drive to a guest VM running on that host. I upgraded the VM hardware to version 7, I added the USB controller virtual hardware to the VM and booted it up. However, I am unable to see the USB devices plugged in to the ESXi host. Am I missing something?
As a secondary note, when I performed the installation of ESXi 4, I had the external USB hard drives hooked up to the server. During the installation I was prompted for the location where I wanted ESXi installed and I did see the USB hard drive locations so I do know that the USB ports are functional on the server.
I have some some searching for a solution but so far I haven't found anything usefull. Everything seems to take me to sites about how to get ESXi to install on a USB memory stick, not the ability to see a memory stick or hard drive in a VM running on the host.
