64bit on Dual Core Pentium (E2220) posted: Sep 9, 2009 4:31 PM

Hi, I'm running XP 32bit on a Pentium Dual Core. Its supposed to be 64 bit compatible (CPU-Z shows EM64T as a feature and the Intel website says its 64 bit compatible), but when I try and install Windows Server 2008 RC2, it says that I don't have a 64 bit compatible CPU.

I installed it on my i7 fine, but I've run into a problem were the gues just freezes now just after it boots, I'm running it on Windows 7 RC1 on that i7, so I guess that may be a contributing factor, so I wanted to give it a go on the old XP machine.

Is it the CPU or do I need to do something to the VM first so it will run 64 bit?

VT-x is required for 64-bit guests on Intel processors. See KB 1901.

Going back to Windows 7 RC1, is there any known issues running Virtual Server 2 on an i7 or Windows7 host combination with Server 2008 RC2 as a guest? As it simply does lock up when it goes to continue the installation of server roles.

I believe that Microsoft has introduced a bug in the e1000 driver in Windows Server 2008 RC2. This can cause your guest to lock up. Try installing the guest without any virtual NICs.

I need not point out the usefullness of a server with no NIC ;)

It may be useful in diagnosing the problem.

Any idea when its likely (if) to get fixed? or any possible work around ?

You should be able to configure paravirtualized NICs (vmxnet) instead of virtual e1000s if you can install VMware Tools in the guest.

Are there are guides around as to how to do that....?

I'm not familiar with the Server UI, and I don't know if it offers a choice of NIC implementations when you add a device. However, you should be able to edit the VM configuration file by hand and change:
ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

to
ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

The first step would be to try the installation without a NIC and see if it works. We don't even know if this e1000 driver bug is the root cause of your problem.

the 2200 series is pretty low end on the dual core spectrum.

maybe up it w\ the newer 5200 or a 7200 or 7400.
