I've been looking for an official statement about Windows 7 as an officially supported host OS for Workstation but I can't find it.

When will it be officially supported?

TIA

Craig

it's not supported yet as a host OS, but it is as a guest OS

However, only VMware would know when support for Windows7 as a Host OS will be available, but they won't comment on future releases.

_But does it work_?

Official support doesn't mean much if you ask me. Having actually filed official bug reports and been given the 6month run around I can't see what it buys me.

All I want to know is Is it functional and Stable on a Win 7 host!

I've been running 2 xp guests on a windows 7 host for a couple of months and so far it has been stable and speedy. I've had a couple of install of upgrades issues but nothing I haven't been able to find a workaround.

Have you tried bridged networking?
I've read early reports of problemss in that area.

VMware employees won't speculate on future features in this forum. But based upon historical behavior, probabaly not until (at least) after the Retail release of Windows 7 on Oct 22nd. My guess is that official support for Windows 7 as a Host will be included in Workstation 7, which is currently in a closed beta.

Also not supported is Ubuntu 9.04, the latest OpenSuse release and the very latest Red Hat release.

The point is that if you wait till VMware officially announces support, you are often half way to the next release of the Host OS.
Certainly this is true of Linux.

Windows 7 is available to developers (msdn/technet) and in fairly wide circulation among this group due to
the fact they have to test products under it, and so far, it performs MUCH better than Vista on the same hardware.

So most of us are willing to try it as long as key features of Vmware work, not the least of which is
networking.

With Hyper-V now available free and VPC for Win 7 not far off I don't know how VMWare can remain silent.

Go play with those while you wait. You will be back soon enough.

For all its minor failings, nothing I've used can touch Workstation, and I've tried most of them.

I have mine thru MSDN as well. As a GUEST, Win 7 outperforms the Vista host. (Go figure).
So I have high hopes for Win7 as a host. But, like you I can't cut over till I know it will work.

VPC for Win7 - is XP Mode - mainly it`s a tool for sealmless running tools and software, no running in Win7.
Workstation 7 must be available in a few month (only must, not shore). Hyper-V powerfull thing, but requires Windows Server. My advice - if you are not a spec or IT pro, who really needs Server - wait for final version of Workstation 7.

I'm running a Windows 7 host, 64 Bit edition, and a couple of Windows Server 2008 R2 clients flawlessly (except for some bugs I've filed so far. I wouldn't call them minor but there are always workarounds.)

VPC doesn't work with 64 Bit versions of Windows, Hyper-V Server is too hard to handle. That's why I'm switching to VMware Workstation.

Bridged networking is all I use. It works fine. I run a home automation application (Homeseer) on one of the XP machines and it connects to about 7 networked devices via TCP/IP and it has been solid.

I'm glad to say Workstation 7 RC is here. I didn't have to wait long....
Where is Workstation 7, Craig??

"RC" means Release Candidate. Which means it's still in the testing phase and not a General Availability (GA) version, which is the fully supported, open to the public version. Some companies have open public RC and beta editions. VMWare does not and you would normally have to be invited into the beta program. So you will have to wait for the Workstation7 GA, whenever that is released.
