Hi,

I'm running VMware Server 2.0.1 on Windows Server 2008. I'm thinking about upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 (RTM). Are there any known problems with R2?

Thanks,
Sven

If nothing else, VMware Tools doesn't install on R2 at the moment (at least not under ESX3U2).

I would be greatly interested in whether Windows Server 2008 R2 can be used as host.

Currently I am running a Hyper-V based system on Windows 2008, but I want to be able te more flexible.
The Hyper-V machine isn't easilly movable to another machine, while VMware systems are.

Next to this I want to upgrade the server to 2008 R2.

So any expirience with this?

I planned on switching over from Hyper-V to VM Ware Server last weekend.

But unfortunately the computer I was using is broken :( (was only three weeks old), so I have to get it repaired first before I can start testing VMware Serve on 2008 R2 :(

Im Runing with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2 x64 as host with vmware server 2.0.1 on, works like a charm, I dont have any problems at all with using windows server 2008 as guest choice in vmware server even if im having a guest runing with Windows Server 2008 R2 inside.

So i say go for it B-)

I have issues running Win2k8 R2 RTM as a host and Win2k8 R2 RTM Guest OS's. Attempting to copy an ISO file from a share on the Host OS to a share on the guest OS from my Desktop PC (Win7 RTM) causes the Host PC to completely lock up.

I've read in the ESX Forums of people having similar issues with the networking, and some suggestions that there may be an issue with the E1000 Driver included in WIndows 2008 R2. I've attempted to Manually change to the VMXNET (Not VMXNET3 as VMware Server 2.01 Console says its not supported), however still had the same issue.

Hardware wise i've changed everything (Mobo, CPU, HDD, PSU, HDDs, you name it rofl) trying to figure out what this problem is, however it appears its a software issue.

So still trying different things, as i was hoping to put this VMware Host Machine into production in the coming Weeks (But could be delayed now).

Looks like for the moment my problems were based around some form of Incompatibility Issue between the Asus P5K SE Motherboard and Windows 2008 R2 (RTM) and not something to do with VMware, as i had uninstalled VMware and was sitll having issues copying from the host PC. (Doh).

However, now i have re-installed using standard Win2k8 Server 64Bit (RTM) and no longer have issues copying files to and from the host.
