When logging into our vCenter Server the vSphere Client hangs over one minute on step "Discovering Plugins..."

If I start the Client locally on the the vCenter Server it only takes seconds.

Anyone else having this problem?

We are using vSphere Client 4.0.0 (Build 162856) and vCenter Server 4.0.0 (Build 162856)

Hi Alex,

Your build information shows that you are using vSphere 4.0 GA version.

During login, vSphere Client checks whether there are any plug-ins(VUM, Converter, GCS) registered to VC.

Have you installed any of these along with your vCenter Server?

Sometimes, vSphere Client can hang due to insufficient CPU/Memory resources on the machine on which Client is installed.

Thanks.

Also, if your vCenter Server and vSphere Client are installed on the same machine, the min memory requirement is 3-4 GB.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. Although my physical machine where I have installed vSphere client has 6GB of memory. Only difference is this is a Windows 7 box. So I tried it on a virtual machine Windows Server 2003 with 4GB of memory. I discover that if I remove the installed plugins then it works and only when I tried to install the VMWare Update Manager then the installation hangs. After that I no longer can connect to the VIrtual Center unless I remove the VUM. Both systems are up to date on patches. Is there any specifics as to why VUM would hang and not let a VSphere Client connect once installed?

I have a similar problem.

vSphere Client and VMware vCenter Server are both Version 4.0.0 (Build 162856)

On a physical server running Windows 2008 x64 SP2 with 8GB RAM

The delay occurs even with vCenter client logging on the local host. The delay started as soon as I configure the Update Manager Plug-in.

During the "Discovering Plugins..." delay, the CPU is at 0 - 4% utilisation.

The current plug-ins installed are:

vCenter Guided Consolidation, vCenter Storage Monitoring, VMware vCenter Update Manager, vCenter Service Status, and vCenter Hardware Status

(not installed is the vCenter Converter)

Any clues would be appreciated.

Thanx

N.

This is interesting. Has anyone else seen that removing the update manager plugin from the client system that you are connecting from will resolve the problem? If we can narrow down the hang to a certain plugin, than it certainly reduces the scope of the problem.

One thing I have personally seen in the past is if there are any old plugins installed (ie from when I was on the Beta), this sometimes will cause hangs like this to occur. So you could try doing an uninstall and reinstall of them which fixed it in the cases I have seen.

Cheers,

/Jonathan

Hi

In my case, if I disable the plug-in it makes no difference. The delay is the same.

When re-enabling the plug-in there is also a reasonable pause (title bar shows the vShere Client is not responding) - if you wait it does complete however. Again no difference to the 'discovering plugins' delay.

Not sure how to un-install the plug-in.

Thx,

N.

If you go to Add/Remove programs on the client you will be able to remove the plugins from there. Disabling is not the same as uninstalling. Let us know how it goes.

OK

Well my client is on the actual vCenter server. Anyhow, I did the add/remove and completely removed Update Manager. After a reboot, the delay is still present, however I get an error message:

There was an error connecting to VMware vCenter Update Manager - server.fqdn:8084.

The request failed because of a connection failure. (unable to connect to the remote server)

If I look in plug-in manager the plugin is still there, with a red icon and disabled.

I can't see a specific add/remove entry to just remove the plugin.

Thx,

N.

Hi

I have also completely removed vSphere Client, rebooted and re-installed vSphere Client.

This has made no difference interms of the delay or the error message. The VMware vCenter Update Manager plug-in is still present (though in a disabled state).

Add/Remove programs doesn't seem to have a reference in it to remove any VMware plug-ins.

Thanks for you assistance.

N.

I am having the same problem... If I uninstall the Update Manager plug-in the client does not hang on the discovering plugins. If I add the plugin back it starts again.

Both vCenter server and cliend are both 162856. plugin is version 4.0.0.394.

Thoughts?

I have removed and reinstalled plugins and UM to no avail.

Since SQL is using AD service account for authentication, I also installed vC using the same AD service account.

When I installed UM it first failed to start the service until I reconfigured the Logon As Local System to the same AD service account.

When I log in using my AD credentials and then start VI Client I get my usual "Discovering Plugins" delay. However when I login in as the AD service account, then the "Discovering Plugins" delay dissapears.

I wonder if you also have a similar setup?

N.

We have a very complex environment. I am having this problem with two of our three vCenters.

With two of our vCenters our MS SQL server and vCenter is located in a high security zone on our network. Since Update Manager has to communicate with the internet it has to be in a lesser secure zone to allow this communications. Currently Update Manager is joined to a domain but vCenter is not joined to a domain.

The third vCenter I am not having this problem with. vCenter and Update Manager are in the same domain and it is running from an Oracle DB.

I can’t find anything in the documentation that talks about AD membership for Update Manager. I have found where AD membership is required for some vShere features. Hmmm.

I will have to look into it more.
