hi all,

I have a freshly installed esxi on a whitebox.. its up and running.

i can ping the box and it can ping all my workstations.. but i have a problem.

For the love of god vsphere client wouldnt connect i keep getting this error : vsphere client could not connect to vcenter server ....... Details : The server took too long to respond (The operation has timed out).

I have tried from my desktop, another desktop with the firewall disabled and even a freshly installed machine with no firewall and they all give the same error.

And as i stated i can ping the box and it can ping all my workstations..

What is wrong ?

Could you clear up, Are you connecting to a vCenter server or directly to the ESXi host? The error message seems to indicate trying to connect to vCenter, but your last comment on ESXi seems to imply you are connecting vSphere Client directly to the host when you get this error?

If you are connecting vCenter directly to the ESXi host server name or ip then you can recycle the management agents at the console. Go to the physical console of the server, login as root, in the configuration menu select the option for restarting management agents.

1. Try connecting using IP address if your using hostname.

2. Try connecting through Web-access

3. Disable the windows firewall on the client workstation from where your trying to connect and then try.

4. On the ESXi Server console press F2 and check and make sure 'Configure lockdown mode' is set to disabled

Make sure the IP address is unique. Static or DHCP. Gateway address correct? You may want to reinstall the ESXi software.

Your whitebox is??? You network card is?

is the box's management IP on the same subnet as your client?

trinimoses obviously some people who have responded have no clue on the actual function of ESXi vs ESX. I on the other hand know well the differences and am experiencing the same issue. If you happen to have found a resolution then it would be appreciated.

Have seen this issue on more than 3 ESXi hosts, build 193498. From multiple Windows clients. The VSphere connection times out while loading inventory. Has anyone found resolution? Always use IP address if not using vCenter, which is the case here. Dell hardware on the HCL. Solid gigE network. No framing/layer 2 issues.

Can you put the screen shot of the ESXi console IP setting, DNS, NIC conf pages?

Running ESXi 4.0.0 Releasebuild-171294

Intel Gigabit CT Desktop NIC

I can ping and access the web page of the ESXi host. I can even login to the ESXi host with the VSphere client, but only about 1 out of 5 times. The other times it just says "The server http://... took too long to respond".

When it does connect sometimes it has an error while trying to query things or browse the data store for example.
