Errors com.vmware.vim.sms status changed

i keep seeing these errors about every two hours "com.vmware.vim.sms status changed from red to green and from green to red. Any ideas on what this means?

Running ESX4, vCenter4.

Thanks ,

Savoy6

Did you power down the VMs before the storage?

We are seeing the issue at a site, just after upgrading the environment to vSphere. This one is green to yellow then yellow to green. We have opened a support request with vmware for it. I'll post back if I get a resolution.

Which alarm or trigger does this apply to, I can't find one similar in the definitions,

Thanks,

Hey Everyone,

I actually have filed a bug on this one the other day. I think it is behavior that is by design currently, based on my research into the issue. This alarm monitors the vCenter server service status and therefore it is triggered if any of the options here change status from green. One of the triggers that causes this particular state change (com.vmware.vim.sms) to go into a yellow alarm state is when the Storage management service sychronizes. There are several different triggers, however this is the only one I have seen occur every couple of hours.

Since the synchronize is normal behavior and does not indicate any problem it is nothing to worry about. I will update once I know more.

Cheers,

/Jonathan

PS - you can reproduce the issue ocasionally by clicking the update button on the storage views tab. If you are quick enough and switch back to vCenter service status, you can sometimes catch the synchronize in a yellow state. Smiley Happy

Just got this back from VMware,

Since you opened this SR, a bug has been opened with our Engineering team to investigate this issue.

A number of other customers have reported the same issue.

It appears that this alarm (Health status changed alarm) changes from green to yellow when one of the vCenter components does a sync to get changes. This sync is normal but does result in the alarm changing state.

As soon as there is an update to the bug, I will drop you an email.

Thanks,

Dan

Bump

Is a patch available yet?

@a2alpha:Could you drop the e-mail from vmware here if you get one?

Please keep in mind per my previous post that this is alarm is expected behavior. Thus I cannot say that there ever will be a patch. I am hoping we can get it changed so that the alarm is not triggered for normal operations but no guarantees. I was the engineer who filed the bug, so I will be sure to update if I hear anything on this.

This said, you can stop getting the alerts on this by removing the email action from the 'Health status changed alarm' alarm. This alarm simply monitors the vCenter service status options.

Cheers,

/Jonathan

Expected behavior?

"...that the alarm is not triggered for normal operations..."

Either there is an unnormal operating status , then i would expect an alarm or there is normal operation, then i would expect no alarm.

A alarm for an normal operation is not an alarm...

Jonathon's post is more useful than the email, cheers for that.

The vCenter service status plugin is what is triggering the alert. The SMS service status item is coded to change to yellow ie 'a warning' when a synchronization occurs with the SMS database. This occurs every few hours, and thus it is expected to get an alert whenever this happens. Smiley Happy I never said I agree with it, I am just saying that this is what you will see and also is why I filed the Problem Report.

Apologies for the bump - is this resolved in U1 ? I'm getting this problem, and the workaround of removing the email action from the health status change alarm definition means I won't be alerted of other problems.

Has anyone found why this happened? Our VC keeps sending out emails when there's a health status change. I enabled trivia logging and debug but doesnt say much. VC/hosts are all up to date

thanks!

I don't know if this is relevant, but I started receiving this message only after I upgraded to Update 1 and enabled VMware Data Recovery targetting a NAS as my data store (via CIFS).

It typically occurs once a day for me.

I'll have to raise a case with VMware as I don't think it's something I should necessarily be disabling.
