Mac Pro Dual Quads 3.0GHz (8 core - April 2007) not able to run 64bit Guest

Help, I should be able to do this.

See this thread as it is a similar issue only my machine is not running any 64 bit stating my machine doesn't support hardware virtualization

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/143298?start=0&tstart=0

Here is what I get:

*"VT operation is not supported by this VM configuration.*

You have configured this virtual machine to use a 64-bit guest operating system. However, this host is not capable of running 64-bit virtual machines or this virtual machine has 64-bit support disabled.

+For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152"+

Running on the latest release but this problem has always been there on previous versions (2.0.5)

10.5.7 (didn't work in previous versions either)

8GB ram

2tb storage

Tried the recommended switch on the config file but nothing.

Thanks

You have one physical CPU that implements VT VMCS revision 7 and another one that implements VT VMCS revision 11. These processors are not compatible for VT execution. One CPU is family 6 model 15 stepping 7 and the other is family 6 model 15 stepping 11. Intel has released a microcode patch that addresses this issue for processors that differ only in the stepping. You should check to see if there is a firmware update from Apple that contains this microcode patch.

Forgot the guests:

Win Server 2003 r2

Win Server 2008

OSX 10.5.6 Server

All 64 bit.

Oh and OSX yields a different message:

"Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization.

To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Fusion supports hardware virtualization."

32 bit guests run fine.

PS: All of them run fine on my Macbook Pro Unibody

So I found this and downloaded MacCPUID here:

http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/download-maccpuid/

And according to the tool everything checks out so what's the deal?

What version of the Boot ROM is running on your system (run System Profiler to find out). Have you applied all relevant firmware updates to this system?

I do recall a few problems on some Mac models in the past where VT was not being enabled properly, and hence Fusion would have some issues with 64-bit guests. See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2744 for more info.

Can you upload the entire vmware.log file? It shouldn't be too big.

Which one though?

The one for the particular VM's? OSX 64 and Win 64?

I forgot to mention, I created these 64 bit machines on my Macbook Pro.

I also just for the sake of testing installed Vista 64 using bootcamp (which I had never done before) and the install went flawlessly. I just wanted to make sure my machine does not have issues with 64 bit. Snow Leopard is running on 64 as well.

I tried but according to them I have the latest patch and it won't let me reapply the firmware or anything. I guess I am screwed.

If you were running Linux or ESX, you could get the latest microcode updates directly from Intel and apply them yourself. With Mac OS X, I believe you have to rely on Apple for the updates. Perhaps a third-party tool is available to apply the microcode updates from Intel?

Hey thank you for your help and support I really do appreciate it.

Can you tell me a little more about this, I don't think that's an unreasonable thing to do and I am willing to go either route to fix my issue on the procs

Any Linux? or ESX? (ESX; do I have to buy just to do this or is there a demo version that I can download?)

Where would I get the microcode? again thanks for your help on this.

Perhaps I was unclear. This isn't something you can do from a VM, because Fusion will not allow a VM to modify the host microcode. I was merely pointing out that some operating systems provide facilities for microcode updates to work around stale firmware. Although Mac OS X is not among them, It's conceivable that someone may have developed a third-party tool to satisfy this need when running Mac OS X.

Where would I get the microcode?

I am not against wiping the mac and install Linux or ESX, can it be done though?
