After 2.0.5 update XP won't load. I see the "grassy knoll and blue sky" but nothing else.

Updated my MacBook Pro w/ 10.5.7. Fusion said to update tools, I did and everything hung = no tools installed nor will XP finish loading. I tried forcing a ctl-alt-del but no luck. Rebooted - Restored Fusion from my Time Capsule but got an error message when I tried to launch 2.0.4 "can't run with older version...update.." Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to force XP to finish loading?

Hello srsaz,

I can suggest attempting to boot Windows in Safe mode, by pressing F8 on startup. If Windows does successfully start up while in Safe Mode you may be looking at a driver issue with VMWare Tools. I would uninstall VMWare tools, by Clicking Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, than uninstalling or removing VMWare Tools, at which point I would re-install VMWare Tools.

Let me know if that helps!

Thanks Eric,

It looks like I'm not able to exit guest mode so I can't get to XP to either quit or restart, safe mode or otherwise. I've tried "rolling back" but it just goes back to guest mode again. I'm still prompted to update VM Tools but nothing downloads, even after 4 hours of waiting.

If I uninstall Fusion on my mac and start over, I loose all the data that was there, right? I'm trying to keep from loosing everything.

I tried a Time Capsule Restore, but it wouldn't load because that version is older than 2.0.5, which I installed yesterday. Yikes!

Finally able to get out of guest mode and now Fusion is working like it used to!

I turned off a spyware/anti-trojan program (Intego / NetBarrier from Washing Machine) that I forgot about. Then I force-quit Fusion and as my MacBook Pro was shutting down I heard The Boing and was encouraged. Upon restart, everything looks ok. I'll try to update my VMWare Tools without Intego/NetBarrier and see what happens.

Two lessons learned: First, don't forget what's running on your computer and Second, don't try to update VMTools with a spyware/trojan blocker on!

Uninstalling Fusion does not affect your Virtual Machines. The virtual machines are generally kept in your ~/Documents folder. You should be able to safely uninstall Fusion, and reinstall without any affect to your virtual machines.

However, I do always recommend backing up (maybe manually instead of Time Machine) to an external drive in case there is any unexpected issues. You may even be able to use the external device you use for time machine. Just be sure not to touch the Backupsdb folder.

You can uninstall Fusion by running the uninstall script found here: /Library/Application Support/Vmware Fusion/Uninstall VMware Fusion

Do you have any other VMs running with Fusion? Are they working correctly?

Let me know if that helps,

Eric
