I had asked this before at http://communities.vmware.com/message/1228608 but that was moved somewhere I can't find it.

I've got the above system running on a MacBook, and when I ran the
Windows Updates from the latest batch over the last couple of days my
XP got stuck in a loop. it would boot, display a "windows shutting
down" box, count down, rebooot, rinse lather repeat. the box sez
something about a DCOM Server Process Launcher Service.

I've restored to a previous snapshot and it works fine. Running MS UPdate breaks it again.

Any idea how to solve this? Update: Still broken in the latest release.

Thanks!

Are you referring to version 2.0.5?

Oops, 2.0.5, I've corrected the main title.

Well taking a quick glance around google doesn't seem to indicate this being an issue with Fusion directly...

Most of the discussions regarding "... must restart because DCOM server process launcher service terminated" with the 1 minute timeout seem to be the result of malware of one sort or another...

Does 'HijackThis' report anything that shouldn't be there? Is there any antivirus software installed?

Do you have AdAware or Spybot installed?

Hi there,

You could try running MS update with the "Custom Install" option and make snapshots between successful reboots until you find the update causing the problem. Sadly this might take some time between downloading each patch and rebooting and taking snapshots...

Hope this helps...

I'm running MBAM and will do SuperAntiSpyWare next, though this machine shouldn't have any malware, I just use it for the few programs that must run under WinDoze, which mostly don't even use the Internet...

I'm running McAfee Managed Virus Scan (whatever they call it this month), and it has never seen anything.

I narrowed the problem down to KB959426, which is some bizarre "blended threat' fix, where someone convinces you to download a file to the desktop and then search in some way that loads the file, but it seems to be an IE thing, which again I don't use for anything off the LAN. I've disabled that update for now, but am hoping to find a better answer.

Thanks for the hints. I'll let you know what I find.
