Hi,
I bought Fusion because I thought there was a great job from the VMware team on this product, comparing to other products such as Parallels and VirtualBox.
Few hours ago, launching Fusion 2.0.4 build 159196 announces me that a new version is available. OK. Download it, install. First glitch: as many Mac users, I forget that Fusion is not closed when I close all its windows... Installer shows me an ambiguous message "The package cannot be installed on this computer"??? What? That's not a way to inform that there is an instance of Fusion
running which need to be closed...
Once installed with no other matter, I launch my XP VM (WHICH WAS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE UNTIL WHAT FOLLOWS THANKS A LOT), I'm informed that VMware Tools are not uptodate, OK, seems fine and logic. As this stage, my XP is still working fine: two virtual disks, nothing to complain. Click on "VMware tools install", letting the automatic process do the job. Once done, I'm invited to restart XP, I do so.
Now... How to say that... Can somebody tells me why, but why, a "simple" VMware Tools install has destroy my virtual disks? XP wasn't even able to start correctly because of the huge disk errors encountered... "error in chain blah blah in cluster xxxxx" couting forever until no more cluster to delete... When doing this "reparations", both processors of the Mac goes to 100%, due to enormous and abnormal system activity. The host system is no more available, process which were running goes into stucked mode...
With an huge amount of patience, I managed to kill the XP VM. Relaunch it. XP system was able to start, with a lot a file moved into the infamous "FOUND.000" folder. Processors activity of the host doesn't goes UNDER 20% of system activity while there is NO activity in the VM... The host system is then extremely sluggish...
So what's about this release indeed? A bad joke?
The "funniest" thing about that, except having a perfectly working XP VM before update, is that the vmdk virtual disk is still perfectly readable by VirtualBox, and even with the XP system partially destroy, VirtualBox doesn't take much more than 5% of user CPU activity. I'm figuring about having a commercial trade of both products. Oups! VirtualBox is free.
By the way, if I paid for Fusion, this is because, as a professional activity, I needed it to run my accounting programm. Lucky me that this accounting programm performs backups everyday. I guess that in case of serious damages on a VM running sensitive data, the EULA on which I click "I accept" before downloading the update disengaged you of any responsability. Wish I could have so many lawyers for protecting me from my paying customers.
No regards this time.
