No, the object named "Virtual Machines" in the "Documents" folder is a folder not a document.


This statement implies that you are just hovering the mouse over the triangle however in Finder, regardless of the view, one must actually click the triangle to expose the contents of the folder.


Fusion can be started regardless of where one might choose to store the Virtual Machine's one has and it does not need to be in the default location of "~/Documents/Virtual Machines" and all objects exposed in Finder whether they be folders, files, packages or bundles are moved the same way and the primary consideration its that these objects be moves while not in use and in the case of a Virtual Machine Package it's best to have the Virtual Machine shutdown, not suspended and Fusion closed before copying/moving and this copying/moving is done just the exact same way one would be copying/moving any other object in Finder. (This really isn't a Fusion issue more so it's an OS X User File Management Issue.)

Hint: Finder (menu bar) > Help > Search > type moving folders then click Show All Results

The is a difference between VMware Fusion (the Application) starting and a Virtual Machine starting as they are two separate things and it make no difference where a Virtual Machine might be stored it has no bearing on VMware Fusion itself starting.

Now if you move a Virtual Machine that is listed in the Virtual Machine Library in Fusion 2.x then you need to rectify the fact that you moved it and that is done simply by deleting the entry (ctrl-click it) for the moved Virtual Machine on the Virtual Machine Library and then starting the Virtual Machine from its new location just as you would any other document of any other application via the File > Open command or you can drag and drop it on to the Virtual Machine Library from it new location in Finder or just execute it (double-click it) in Finder and it open in the associated application and in this case it would be VMware Fusion.

You need to try and be a bit more specific about what you do not follow (if possible).

That's a good reason however I'd just move the Virtual Machines Folder to the root om your Home Folder not the Downloads Folder.
