hello guys,

I'm having problems syncing my new blackberry curve 8330 with windows xp on vmware. I have a macbook, the one that can run both mac os and windows os. For work, I HAVE to use windows, so I run windows xp using vmware fusion. On that windows, I run my data base, that I sync with outlook 2003, and then sync outlook with my phone.

I used to have a treo 600, and was doing fine. but with the blackberry, it is hell!

I have unistalled hotsync for palm, and downloaded blackberry Desktop Manager 4.7 on my vmware windows) side of my mac. The problem occurs when I connect the usb cable with the laptop and the blackberry. the wmare window shrinks (goes from full screen to half the screen, and the screen turns black), with an error message from vmware:

"The device "Research In Motion RIM Composite Device" was unable to connect to its ideal host controller. An attempt will be made to connect this device to the best available host controller. This may esult in an undefined behavior for this device."

I click ok.

then the screen comes back to live (no more black), and the usb picks up the device (showing up on the device manager), also showing the device connected and pin on the desktop manager (DM). On the dm, I can set up the calendar, notes, etc... for syncing (outlook sync with device or overwrites one or the other). but when i click on syncronizing button, nothing happens, no syncing happens, neither on the device nor on outlook, nor on the dm.

Most recently, I have done the following: go to the USB Devices panel of the Settings window for this virtual machine, and select Enable USB 2.0 support. still nothing...

not sure what to do next, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

mmm, I'm afraid there aren't many takers for this question it looks like.

I'm wondering if it is just that it cannot be done and I should just
forget about it, or that it is too complicated or unusual, and that
nobody out there knows the answer.
Either way, thank you for looking into this, I really appreciate any feedback.

New development on this issue: Bryan and JLevy73 from blackberryos.com recommended the following, I thought I would share this with you guys and see if anyone had any ideas. I really want to get this thing to work.

Their suggestion:

"With VMware off, click Virtual Machine then settings then USB devices. Make sure the following are both checked:

1. Enable USB 2.0 support
2. Automatically connect USB devices

If you not already done so Install VMware tools.

"

My results:

"

all right. So I did go through your instructions, and realized that I
had not before installed the vmware tools, so I did that. I also made
sure that both boxes below are checked:
1. Enable USB 2.0 support
2. Automatically connect USB devices

I restarted xp on vmware, and connected the bb via usb.

the good news: the screen didn't go black and I didn't get the error
message "The device "Research In Motion RIM Composite Device" was
unable to connect to its ideal host controller." So my hart started
racing: did we solve this issue and will I be able to sync?

The bad news: even though the bb is connected via the usb (showing as
connected), the bb desktop manager does not pick it up (device conneced
pin: None , and dm status "not connected"). Also, in the bb dm, under
configure synchronization tab, both the synchronization and the view
log button are unclick-able (light grey).

The irony is that when I was getting the error message, after clicking ok, the bb dm was picking up the device's pin.

So Bryan and Jlevy73, I am affraid we are back to square one. I thank
you both greatly for your research, and if you have any other idea's or
suggestions, I'm all ears.
Also, if anyone out there has an idea of how to solve this, I will gladly listen.
thanks
Ioranna

Latest update: I talked to the verizon tech support team yesterday night, they couldn't do anything, so they transfered me to the blackberry tech support, who told me that they did not provide support for macs running windows xp via vmware. back to square one.

at this time, with the virtualmachine/settings/usb devices - enable 2.0 support and automatically connect usb devices checked, and the vmware tools installed, I do not get the error message "unable to connect to ideal host controler", but also the bbdm4.7 does not pick up the usb device even though virlualmachine/usb shows "disconnect rim device"., indicating that the mac and pc are picking up the device...

not sure where to go from here, so let me know if you guys come up with anything

thanks

Sorry for the delay in looking at this. Can you get a log with USB debugging enabled as in Information Gathering for VMware Fusion?

No problem at all, just emailed you the archive.zip file. I have also sent you screenshots of what happens each step of the way (not sure it will help, but at least this way you have it).

thanks again Eric, I really appreciate your help and time on this

Eric, I have also added some screenshot so you can see what is
actually going on with the bb desktop manager, not sure it will help
you, but at least you have it this way

Those are the right logs, but you didn't have usb.analyzer.enable = "TRUE" set when generating them. Remember that Fusion must not be open when editing the .vmx config file.

I did go into the vmx config file in text edit, and looked for that usb.analyzer.enable . Since it wasn't there, I added that line of script (usb.analyzer.enable = "TRUE" ) at the end of the text file, and then saved it (or at least I think I did, and from that looks of it, I probably did it wrong).

so let me try again and get back to you on this, sorry

Another question - does the Blackberry show up in Window's Device Manager?

here are the logs again, this time I think with the right set up (to
make sure, I sent you a copy of the vmx file as text.
regarding the question on the device manager and whether the rim shows
up there, I do not think so. I clearly remember it showing up there
when I didn't have connect usb2 checked, but now, it is not. I have
attached a screen shot as well for your review

thanks Eric

don't think so, here is a screen shot, you might know better.
as I mentioned in my earlier post, I clearly remember it being there
when the "enable usb2 support" was checked off. But then again, but
doing that, we get the ideal host error message.
