Hi,

I've seen the KB article bout backing up Lab Manager. It basically says to use array backups or agent based backups and that you can't use VCB.

I'm about to deploy a LM solution for a customer and want to use a virtualisation backup solution such as esXpress. (or Veeam, vRanger). I've heard that this doesn't work and I'd like to understand if this is true and why not? Is it to do with the snapshots? Is there a work around?

My requirements are to backup selected VMs within the Lab Manager deployment and also the Lab manager database, config library itself.

Thanks

Peter

It is true, because the ESX host does not have the mapping of the snap shot tree, the LM database does. So to support this, a 3rd party would need to access the LM database and the ESX host to map everything back. Once ESX/VC supports linked clones, you will see 3rd parties be forced / natively support these types of snap shots trees.

If the Lab Manager was sitting virtual and you used a vRanger type product to backup LM and the virtual lab machines, would this work? What would you suggest would be the best course of action to backup a Lab Manager environment at present?

Does anyone suggest an answer to Scott's question. I would like to know too. I don't have access to a SAN for LUN snapshot backup methods. I need another procedure.

Regards, Nick
