Hi everyone,
Were looking on purchasing Virtual Center Foundation, then upgrade to Standard edition next year, to gain the HA component as $$$ is tight this yr.
I noticed V Sphere is out as well...
Is this the "new version" of Virtual Center? or is it a product ment to address different needs?
Can anyone explain the difference between the two in a nut shell?

I'm not shure which we should purchase at this point.

We have a SAN, two esxi servers, and are looking at purchasing Virtual Center Server foundation, as well as Veeam backup.

Thanks!

Peter

VC Foundation could be fine you have 2 or 3 ESX.

For pricing you can choose or Acceleration Kit, or maybe also the new "Essential" packaging.

Hello all.

I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to VMWare.
I've tested VMWare Workstation and right now I have VMWare Server (In production) and I'm testing VMWare ESXi 3.5.

I explored the web and still have my doubts regarding VSphere and VCenter.

We're looking to migrate our VM servers (currently about 10 or 12) to a more robust and complete platform such as ESX.
Of course, we're looking to administrate them the best possible way, guarantying bussiness continuity (VCB) and high performance among others.

I've read about VSphere and VCenter, including features, licensing and pricing.
Still, I don't understand the difference (technically speaking) between them.

I mean, suppose I have 5 ESX servers. From what I get, VSphere is like an agent or application that groups them all and VCenter Server is the administration center for all the features.

Is this correct or am I misunderstanding something?

If this is correct, this would mean that I could have VC Foundation without having to acquire VSphere.
What happens then to the features offered by VSphere such as VCB (The one we're most interested in)?

Thanks for your time,
Jorge G.

still have my doubts regarding VSphere and VCenter.

vSphere is just the name of the infrastructure (previous name was Virtual Infrastructure).
vCenter Server is the management tool (previous name was Virtual Center Server).
ESX is the hypervisor.

With the new release there are also new name for the different editions. See:
