If you run a virtual machine on vsphere, and don't upgrade the virtual hardware, does this present any problems?

My plan was to install vsphere on a server, and then vm machines to it, without upgrading the hardware on the vm machine.

So I can then migrate the machines back to my esxi 3.5 server if necessary.

Like many of you I am planning to upgrade my test servers, before upgrading my production servers.

if you have 3.x Hosts in your cluster, then I would wait to upgrade the virtual hardware and the VMware Tools of your guests until all your ESX Hosts are on the same build.

Here's a good thread worth checking out as well

Yes, upgrading hardware is purely option (although required for some new features such as VMDirectPath). Things will work just fine if you don't upgrade the virtual hardware in your old VMs.
