[Bug] Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 hangs at starting udev

Bug:

RHEL 5.2 guest freezes at "starting udev".  This started occurring after I switched to 2 virtual CPUs.  The problem is not consistent.  Before I put my host to sleep and then reboot this morning, I was able to successfully run the REHEL guest and see the two CPUs running. I suspect it may have something to do with my second USB Ethernet adapter getting a different USB id assigned.

Another possibility is something to do with the VMWare Tools. When I was booting into the hang-up this morning, it was informing me that I need to install VM Tools even though they were already installed. I went back to 1 CPU, and all was normal again.

This seems to be a Fusion issue - under VMware workstation 6.5.2, I have never seen it hang with 2 CPUs in the RHEL guest VM.  However, when using Workstation, both ethernet adapters were not removable; they were both PCI cards in a Xeon machine.

System:

VMware Fusion: 2.0.4

Host: MacBook Pro 15" OS X 10.5.6, 2.4GHz Core2 Duo, 4GBRAM

Two Nics: Trendnet USBTU-ET1000C with open source Pegasus drivers, and built-in adapter

Guest: RHEL 5.2 with 2 network adapters bridged to my two physical adapters on host.

_VMware Bug Tracking Rant:_

I am disturbed that Vmware users are prevented from reporting bugs unless they have a current  paid support contract. Reporting bugs on a community forum will certainly prevent additional clues from ever reaching the official bug tracking system; clues that can help developers identify a pattern to help isolate where the problem is and where it is not and where to focus their efforts.

As a software developer, I would have been willing to reward my customers for each bug found to help improve my application.  I do not understand why any software company would make it difficult to report bugs.  As a long time customer and evangelist of VMware products,  my perception of VMware as a company has been lowered.

Any tips on a work-around for two cpu operation are appreciated,

Thank you for your reply.

That may be worth a try. Basically set my RHEL Linux VM to two virtual CPUs before beginning the install.

It is worth noting I did not have to do this with VMware workstation.  I installed it under 1 CPU and then later switched to two with no hang up and was able to test my mulit-threaded codec software on a RHEL guest running on a Vista host with no issues.  Curious...

Thanks again,

Re: [Bug] Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 hangs at starting udev

Setting two CPUs before booting into the install did not work.  Now it hangs during the install at "Loading SCSI driver", Loading ata_piix driver...  If I change it back to one CPU, it zooms fast the Loading SCSI stage with no issues.

Bummer, should have bought Parallels for the Mac and stuck with VMware Workstation only for the PC.

Re: [Bug] Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 hangs at starting udev

I just downloaded the 14-day trial version of Parallels.  I setup a VM with 2 CPUs ( they support up to 8 ! ) and 3 network adapters and then installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 with no issues.  They even have better OpenGl support which I need for my software testing.

I wasted a good part of my weekend with Fusion trying to do the same thing without ever suceeding.  The user interface to setup a VM in Parallels is more intuitive than either Workstation or Fusion.  They even ask that you provide feedback when you install - unlike VMware that only lets customers with up-to-date paid support give them feedback on bugs.

I'm depressed now.  I recommended a co-woker purchase Fusion for his Mac - I wasted his money.   And now I have to go through the software-purchase-request-hassle at work before my 14-days evaluation expires.  I already had purchased Fusion myself as I had used Workstation for a long time under Windows.  Oh well.  I should have evaluated the trial software of both before purchase.

Re: [Bug] Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 hangs at starting udev

I use Vmware server v2.0.2 with Windows XP SP3 host and an Intel dual core processor. I try to install Red Hat Entreprise Linux Desktop workstation (RHEL) release 5 Update 2, 32 bits with a new VM with 2 processors. No vmware tools are installed.

After initial install process, I reboot. When service "udev" start during boot, the Linux "freeze.

Soluce : In the VM, select one processor only. You do not need to reinstall RHEL5.
