I've downloaded the "VMware ESX Server 3i U4 Installable Refresh" is this VMware ESXi latest version?

If you're doing a new install, then it is the latest. If you're patching then there is a more recent version. Even if you're doing a new install you should patch to the latest release as it includes a security patch.

I'm trying to install on a new box with MB Supermicro X7DBE but doesn't succeded yet, the installation doesn't recognise the HDD.

What's the model and PCI id of the storage controller?

The SATA controller is a: 3ware 9690SA

09:00.00 RAID bus controller Mass storage controller: 3ware Inc
Class 0104: 13c1:1005

The motherboard have a intigrated SATA-controller, but the list is scolling to fast to read teh ID.

Is it possible to pause the list when running command: lspci -v

you can run

lspci | head

and then lspic | head -n 20

and then increment -n XX if necesary.

I figurede out that I could use the command: lspci -v | less

to be able to scroll though the list.


I have succeded to install ESXi on a IDE-disk via the guide at: http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive.php


So the next step is to figure out how to enable the 3ware 9690SA SATA-cotroller in ESXi.

Whats the best way to transfer a file to ESXi?

I want to replace the "oem.tgz"-file.

anyone tested this: VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 3 Driver CD for AMCC 3ware 9650SE and 9690SA SAS HBA Controllers ?
I am running vmware server 2 on ubuntu 8.04 and was thinking of switching to ESXi ...

The ISO image would be for use with ESX only, but you could extract the driver from it and add it to oem.tgz - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php.
