What is the best free operating system to run a benchmark test or Proof-of-Technologies class of Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) 11.50 inside of VM-ware? Assuming it is Linux, what brand and version of Linux?
I would suggest CentOS or Ubuntu. Two of my favorite free OS builds. OpenSolaris is also an option if you're more comfortable in a solaris environment.
