I am getting a purple screen of death when I shutdown/restart my host.

It seems like the important part of the message is something about:

"failed to collect ACPI interrupt routing information"

Any ideas?

Try to boot esxi with noapic option and see if it helps. In case it doesn't you need to log a case with Vmware to get the psod dump analyzed.

Any chance this is the same as the VMKernel.Boot.APIC option in the advanced settings for the host?

Is it pretty safe to try that (meaning I can easily undo it if it doesn't fix the problem)?

If you set that advanced option it will set the boot option after a system backup is taken (1 minute past the hour, on shutdown or when manually run as in the image below).

Interesting. So it will automatically re-load those values without needing to reboot the server (roughly on an hourly basis)? I did not know that!

Anyway, I experimented with turning it off, and rebooting my server. I don't think it really fixed anything, and it appeared to make my machine run sluggishly. Specificially it felt like the machine was sputtering; pausing for a few seconrds at a time.

I re-enabled it, rebooted, and it seem better now.

For what it is worth, there are two related settings in my BIOS:

ACPI 2.0 (enable/disable) and ACPI APIC (enable/disable)

I am currently running with the first enabled, second disabled...

I am going totry this again since I think that "sputtering" I was reported was related to something else.

Out of curiosity, there are other ACPI related switched:

  • IOAPCIs
  • logicalACPIIDs
  • timerenableACPI
  • Enable HPET
  • xAPCIForce

Should I only be monkeying with the first the ACPI one?
