Hi,

I've been trying to figure out if vmware products (VMware Server and VMware ESX) are supported on Itanium servers, and from what I've read so far, it seems that the answer is a 'no'. I just wish to get a confirmation on this.

In particular I was looking at using VMware on the HP Integrity rx4640 server. A quick check on the hardware compability list at http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=base&deviceC showed that it wasn't supported. Searched the KB but the last posting on Itanium seems to be way back in 2006, so I'm not sure if things have changed since.

Would appreciate a confirmation on this.

Thanks!

vanan

Vanan,

the short answer is NO.

The long answer is NO as it doesn't make any sense. The industry is dropping Itanium Vs endorsing it. Ten years ago Itanium was supposed to be the next generation Intel architecture, right now Intel is just waiting (and looking forward) to pull the plug as soon as they can. I am saying this to add a "don't hold your breath" on the long answer to your question.

Massimo.

Hello,

However, HP has developed some sort of VM technology for the Itanium. It used to be called HP VM. If you have a bunch of Itaniums you may want to investigate this option.

It's now called HP Integrity Virtual Machines (Integrity VM)

Hello.

Thanks Ken, I saw the 'early' stages of HP VM before it was released so did not know the real name.

Report back on what you find!

Hello,

Pity that VmMware has not given support for Itanium chipset earlier.

Anyway, HP VMs work well on Itanium. Here is one

of my IA64 servers with virtual machines:

Virtual Machine Name VM # OS Type State #VCPUs #Devs #Nets Memory Runsysid
==================== ===== ======= ========= ====== ===== ===== ======

vm-hpuxv3a 1 HPUX On (OS) 1 2 2 2 GB 0
vm-hpuxv3b 2 HPUX On (OS) 1 2 2 2 GB 0
vm-rhel51 5 LINUX On (OS) 1 7 2 2 GB 0
vm-rhel53 8 LINUX On (OS) 1 2 2 2 GB 0
vm-win2003 9 WINDOWS On (OS) 1 2 2 2 GB 0
vm-sles11 10 LINUX On (OS) 1 2 2 2 GB 0

Next year, I even plan to add OpenVMS VM (not that it makes much difference to the masses

as OpenVMS is not for the faint-hearted) :)

Cheers,
