My setup: Mac Pro tower dual quad core, 12 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.6, VMware Fusion 2.0.1. Other guests include XP Pro & XP Pro 64-bit.
This is my very first encounter with any Linux in a VM. I created a new quest for Oracle Red Hat Enterprise Linux Release 5 Update 2 for x86 (32-bit). I followed the instructions to install VMware Tools, as root, in /tmp. I accepted all defaults. Many messages like "The bld-2.6.18-8.el5-i686smp-RHEL5 - vmhgfs module loads perfectly into the running kernel". Also six warnings at the end, all like "(WW) VMWARE(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xd3e00000,0x80000)".
FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:7100" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
Starting VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
Switching to guest configuration:
Guest vmxnet fast network device:
VM communication interface socket family:
Guest operating system daemon:
The configuration of VMware Tools 7.9.3 build-128865 for Linux for this running kernel completed successfully.
I shutdown the guest, and changed a few settings. Selected 4 virtual processors and 4GB RAM. Under Hard Disks, I checked Pre-allocated 20GB (was split into 2GB). It then rebuilt the virtual disk or whatever the message was.
Upon reboot:
Welcome to Enterprise Linux Server
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
Starting udev: <it hangs here, I type ^C>
. . .
Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode:
. . .
Overall, everything is , except for the one .
Note that within the guest, I can open networking, open my mac pro, see all the folders. Only other problem I see is opening the web browser icon - "Error: The browser firefox does not exist. Please reconfigure.". I do have Safari and Firefox in use on the Mac side. Not sure what to do here.
Regards,
Alan
I encountered this same "...brower firefox does not exist" when clicking on the brower icon.
My environment is fresh install of Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 (basically Redhat 5) on VMware fusion on Macbook Pro (Leopard).
I get this same error running CentOS 5.3 on VMware Workstation after installing VMware tools on the guest machine. Before installing the VMware tools the machine performs perfectly, other than having to use CTRL-ALT to switch between host and guest machines, setting the desired screen resolution and stuff like that.
As I am using this machine to play around with Logical Volumes and Volume Groups failing to mount the local filesystem is proving to be somewhat of a pain in the ass...
Enabling Local Filesystems: FAILED
Any ideas or workarounds for this issue?
