Hello...BETA OS, Not only that, but it is the First version of the public beta. Stick to running it as a guest... ;)

I had no problems installing VMware Server 2.0 build 122956 on Windows 7 x64, build 7000 (the public beta).

I did have to run the installer as an administrator (right click and select 'Run as Administrator') to get it to work, but I run XP and Linux guests inside of it without significant issues. I do seem to crash the host OS a little more frequently when running VMs than I do when using it native only.

Unfortunately, I can't offer any help for the error that was shown above if 'Run as Admin' doesn't correct it.

I had no issues with the install, but I am noticing that my NAT is not working properly. When I join machines to the NAT network, they can ping out to internet destinations both by name and by IP...but port 80 traffic is a no go. web browsing fails, etc. Can't even telnet on 80. For that matter, it doesn't look like I can telnet out on any port. 443 and 53 fail as well...I've confirmed the firewalls are completely disabled on both my host and guest, even switched every VMware Server executable to run in various compatibility modes and as an administrator...but nothing seems to work. Has anyone confirmed working NAT behavior with their VMs? I should mention, my VMs are Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, nothing fancy.

Thanks, Andrew

I also have problems with nat and bridge option. I cannot browse to any site,...
Strange, with Vista everything worked perfectly.

Again, I will say this again...Beta OS. The TCP/IP stack in 7, is not the same as Vista...it has additional items built in to it for IPv6, and security issues. With that said, have you tried updating your NIC driver on 7? What physical NIC's are you using, maybe there is a common denominator for those of you that are having issues.

Ever since I changed to the 32-bit version of Windows 7 it has worked fine. I am fully convinced the offending executable was vmnetlib64.exe

That doesn't surprise me, since like I said, the network Stack in 7 is not the same as Vista, and there might be additional differences in 64 v 32.

So it appears we have two questions that everybody must answer that is having this issue:

1.) 32 or 64

2.) What physical NIC and Driver version

B-)

That more or less defeats the purpose of having a beta to play with in the first place now, doesn't it? Odd as it may seem, some of us actually use betas to test whether our favorite software will work and then report that back to the company so they can improve the beta. Imagine that!

I do also, but that is also the point of VM...I run it as a guest, not a host. I also run it on a 2nd machine, that I wouldn't install something like VM Server on. Why would I want a BETA OS as the base platform I am using to test other OS's and programs...??? I am sorry, it just doesn't make any sense?..?..?

I said that, and then if you will continue reading I am attempting to narrow down the common denominators as to the failure of 7 as a Host. So I might not agree with why, I am still helping to solve it, whereas you are just making stupid commentary comments. Do you have anything to add to the trouble shooting?

No, the point of running VMware in Win 7 is to see what VM-Win7 resource usage is like. Can't do that hosted in a VM! I run VMWare desktop in Win 7 32 bit and are experiencing the same NAT failure.

Any updates on this with later builds? I'd like to try it with x64 build 7077 -- which is the RC "escrow" build.
