Is there an incompatibility with images made under Fusion 2.0.1 and having them load/run on VMware Server 2.0? I've created a plain Ubuntu 8.04.1 installation with Fusion, transfer it over to my VMware Server machine and then attempt to "Add Virtual Machine to Inventory". It crashes VMware Server and I have to resort to restarting the vmware services. Can anyone point me to a solution?
As a work around, I created a new VM inside Server and specified the use of an existing virtual disk (the one created with Fusion). I was able to bring the machine up okay but had to manually reconfigure the ethernet device settings to eth1 for some reason. Anyway, all is well now.

This suggests the problem is in the .vmx file. Please post both the one created by Fusion and the one created by Server 2.0.
What platform are you using Server on?
I had the same issue andmanaged to solve it by doing the following:
delete any vmdk.lck directries
delete any vmem.lck directories
delete the quicklook-cache.png file
edit the .vmx file and set to FALSE entries for USB, SOUND and SERIAL.
bosconet,
your workaround worked like a charm, thanks, you saved my Friday night!!

If anyone runs into this in the future, can you save the .vmx before you edit it (and note which version of Server and what platform you're using) so we can look at it and try to fix this?
I just ran into this problem (again) and was lucky enough to re-find this thread since I had forgotten the fix. I am using Fusion 2.0.4-159196 and VMWare Server 2.0.0-122956 64-bit. Attached is my source vmx file from Fusion that crashes the VMWare Server.
Thanks,
Keir

If your having a problem with VMware Server then you should be posting in VMware Communities > VMTN > VMware Server.
Other then that have you tried what worked for others in this thread?
I was posting in this thread because the method of editing the vmx file does work. Someone requested that a source vmx file be posted for analysis and that is what I did. It would be nice to not have to hand edit the vmx files in order to move them to VMWare Server.

Sorry but that was not evident or obvious from what you had said.
