Hi all

I have 2 esx 3.5 u2 connected to vc 2.5 u2

There are 10 vm on each esx. I can backup most vms with consolidated backup except 2 vms

When I try to backup these 2 vms I get an error on VI Client

The error is: "Creating a quiesced snapshot failed because the create snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine"

And when I look at /var/log/vmkernel I get the error : "Unable to find device: 141a4-STTI0111_1-000002-delta.vmdk"

What should the problem is? Is there any Idea?

Try to manually create a snapshot of the vm from ESX using the snapshot manager. Then, delete it and retry vcb.

Are you using RDM attached to the vm's that are failing?

Did you select to include 'memory' when you created the snapshot?

Try your mount again with -L 4 (default is 3, max is 6). This should produce a more verbose output from your mount command through vcb mounter.

Vcbmounter -L 4 -h VC ip -u VC user -p password

Are you using VCB 1.5 or earlier? Try a higher debug value, 6, and see if you get anymore data.

Hello mate,

I might be teaching you to suck eggs here, but..

Can you check your snapshot manager to see if you already have active snaps for that VM, if not or if so , can you confirm that checking the contents of your .vmx file for that VM reflects the amount of/lack of snaps that you expect to see compared to what snapshot manager sees?

Have you zoned your VCB proxy so it can see all the LUNS that are presented to that VM?

It just feels like VCB is inspecting your machine and expecting to see snap files which the VCB cannot see because they never were or it cannot get access to.

Regards

Paul.

Hi Guys

I am having the same problem, and i am using VRdm's attached to this file server (virtual machine). They have been added/deleted to set them up correctly.

Could you shed some more light on this please?

Regrads

Hi All

If you get this message when backing up a windows host, please check your event logs - particularly the windows application log - if you have SQL server running and there is a configuration problem (in a case we solved it was that the user had deleted the SQL database files during testing but not deleted the SQL database config in the SQL Manager, so the SQL config was orphaned).

Whereas a straight snapshot will work, it does not try to do anything clever with the SQL transactions via the VMTools that you have installed, whereas via VCB, it proxies the VMTools to make sure that the SQL is instructed to complete all transactions fully before the snapshot is made - if the SQL config has orphaned databases, this cannot be completed and it generates loads of SQLVSS errors in the application log.

To solve this, deal with the SQL server config issues and then it will work just fine.

Good Luck

This error is due to the guest not being able to quiesce the file system. This is generally going to be because of VSS, and errors should be throw in the guest's event logs. Obviously VMs with a higher disk utilization will be more prone to experiencing this problem then others.

You will also want to check to ensure that VSS is up to date. I believe Microsoft also has a hotfix for VSS in certain situations (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887827 for details).
