how to make SAN tape library local to VM

Hi,

I have a ESX Machine version 3.5u3 ( with FC card's ) and SAN supported Tape library .We have a Brocade switch

connected with One ESX Machine ,NetApp Storage and Tape Library (Quantum i500 scalar)

1.Suppose i install Backup software on one of VM's ... can we see the SAN tape library from VM ?

I like to fire backup from VM to the tape library ( VM -> SAN Tape library ) ie Tape library should act local tape to VM

2.If somebody has done it ..Can you please share how to configure it .

Hi,

From the vi35_backup_guide.pdf

You can back up virtual machine data by running a backup server within a virtual machine that is connected to a tape drive or other SCSI‐based backup media
+ attached to the physical system. Before you begin, take note of the following restrictions:+
VMware supports attaching SCSI drives to the ESX Server using Adaptec SCSI adapters. Using other adapters, such as LSI MPT‐Fusion SCSI, is not
+ supported.+
If you are using a tape drive library (versus using a stand‐alone tape drive), the library must be multi‐target, and not multi‐LUN.
Set the tape drive’s virtual target ID in the virtual machine’s configuration to be the same as the physical target ID.

Hello,

The author of http://www.boche.net/blog/?p=115 did quite a bit of research on this exact topic including investigating NPIV possibilities. It would be where I would start. But in general if you can not see the Tape Device from within the VIC then ESX may not be able to see it.
