Host O/S: Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid)
Guest O/S: Windows XP Professional, latestservice pack

It worked perfectly with 8.04 (Hardy) as the host O/S, using the ATI accelerated graphics driver and the VM set to use "Accelerated 3D Graphics DirectX 9.0c".

When I first upgraded to Intrepid it worked perfectly. However, in the last week Ubuntu came out with a new kernel (uname -a: Linux CERTIBY-DEV1 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:06 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux), and I also switched from the generic video drivers back to the accelerated fglrx ATI proprietary driver.

~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8087 Release

When I turn on Unitiy mode, none of the Windows programs appear on the Linux status panel, and if I try to retun to the Windows XP guest O/S the entire screen is grey, ande nothing accessible. I have tried powering on the guest O/S using both VMware Player and VMware Worstation, and with the VM's set to use the "Accelerated 3D Graphics DirectX 9.0c", and with it turned off -- all with the same results.

I have the same problem with 8.10. It first the unity mode worked and after a while (perhaps some updates) it stopped working.

When I try to use the unity mode it hangs my display completely and does not seem to paint.

I have unlike to DavidKhan a nvidia graphics card.

To resolve the problem I tried the following without success:

- Use the open source graphics driver

- Disable Compiz (I have some other bugs with workstation 6.5 which can be resolved disabling compiz)

- Try a fresh instalation of the guest os

- Turn on/off 3d Acceleration and Autofit guest .... in the configuration of the machine

Is there anything else I could try?

I'm seeing the exact same problems on two different workstations, except it wasn't a kernel update that did it. I was able to temporarily fix it by uninstalling workstation (/usr/bin/vmware-uninstall) and then reinstalling it (from the bundle). Then it worked until the first time I exited Workstation. After that it was the same thing, when you click the Unity button, Workstation minimizes, then maxes out one of the cpu cores and hangs. The uninstall/reinstall worked on two different machines both running 8.10 64bit with Nvidia graphics cards.

I hope we can find a fix soon because I have already become addicted to Unity.

Select " Help" -> "About" menu option and make a note of current location and file name for the UI log file.

Now try Unity and post the UI log file

What X Windows manager are you using?

Have you tried using other windows mangers?

I also had a problem with VMware Workstation, Unity and Ubuntu: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/12/01/vmware-workstation-ubuntu-and-unity/

in short check if /etc/vmware/config contains "<code>xkeymap.nokeycodeMap = true". If so, check my blog post</code>

depping, You got it!!! I had added "xkeymap.nokeycodeMap = true" to /etc/vmware/config and had completely forgotten about it.

Thanks for your help. Glad to have Unity back!!

put the following in ~/.vmware/config

xkeymap.keycode.108 = 0x138 # Alt_R
xkeymap.keycode.106 = 0x135 # KP_Divide
xkeymap.keycode.104 = 0x11c # KP_Enter
xkeymap.keycode.111 = 0x148 # Up
xkeymap.keycode.116 = 0x150 # Down
xkeymap.keycode.113 = 0x14b # Left
xkeymap.keycode.114 = 0x14d # Right
xkeymap.keycode.105 = 0x11d # Control_R
xkeymap.keycode.118 = 0x152 # Insert
xkeymap.keycode.119 = 0x153 # Delete
xkeymap.keycode.110 = 0x147 # Home
xkeymap.keycode.115 = 0x14f # End
xkeymap.keycode.112 = 0x149 # Prior
xkeymap.keycode.117 = 0x151 # Next
xkeymap.keycode.78 = 0x46 # Scroll_Lock
xkeymap.keycode.127 = 0x100 # Pause
xkeymap.keycode.133 = 0x15b # Meta_L
xkeymap.keycode.134 = 0x15c # Meta_R
xkeymap.keycode.135 = 0x15d # Menu

Almost!

I had the same issues and edited my config file as recommended and it almost worked for me. Unity works great now. My keys work great while in full screen or console mode, but while in Unity mode, the keyboard problems remain.

Can anyone else having this issue? Any ideas?
