Anti-Virus issues on Virtual System

I have a client running SBS 2003 virtually. They have a McAfee grant with all the fixins, EPO, AV, Groupshield, etc. Once I had the full suite installed, the client began to experience a disconnect problem once a day. The time of this disconnect would vary from day to day but it would only happen once.

I had no errors on the server, the client would get an Event ID: 26 regarding Outlook and their Access DB or Quickbooks would lock up. I didn't suspect McAfee at first as their phone system also was having issues, once a day it would drop all its calls and it started at approx the same time this problem cropped up on their server. We replaced the UPS, the network switch, etc. However, as part of the troubleshooting process I did expand my exclusion list to add all Databases, Exchange files, and all VMware related folders and files on both the Virtual Machine and the Host.

I contacted McAfee. Since they have some sort of relationship with Vmware for some of the products, I assumed they would have suggestions or had run into this issue before. The support person was unable to offer any help, even after approaching their Level 2 support personnel.

Ultimately I uninstalled all McAfee products on both the host and the VM and the problem went away immediately and has not returned.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Is there a better product I could provide my client that will avoid these issues? I appreciate everyones time and recommendations.

Hello.

When using VMware Server, I always exclude the .vmdk files from being scanned on my hosts. Also be mindful of the timing of scheduled scans - you wouldn't want a couple of guests and the host to all be running these at the same time.

Can you find any correlation in the timing between scanning and the disconnects?
Can you describe in more detail the setup here?
Is it one Windows host running one Windows VM?
Is the host doing anything else, or just hosting VMware Server?
How are your disks laid out on the host?

Q. Can you find any correlation in the timing between scanning and the disconnects?

A. I would see a related McLog on the server approx .1 minute after the outlook disconnect. The log was different each time. Sometimes it would say a scan took too long on a particular file so it stopped. I spoke to McAfee about 6 times before I uninstalled their application. I also applied any patches and settings they suggested.

Q. Can you describe in more detail the setup here? Is it one Windows host running one Windows VM? Is the host doing anything else, or just hosting VMware Server? How are your disks laid out on the host?

A. The Virtual Machines is Small Business Server 2003 SP2. The host is running Windows Server 03 64 bit. It is running 2 Quad Core Xeon processors and 12 Gb of ram. It is only hosting this one VM. The drive is configured in a RAID 5. It is running VMware Server 1.0.6. I would like to upgrade them to 2.0 but they are a 24hr company so finding a good time for this is proving difficult.

I appreciate your time. Thanks!
