Hi! We are evaluating EMC:s product EMC Control Center (for VMware) for storage discovery, but we are having problems to get the discovery process to start.

This product uses the VMware MOB (Managed Object Browser) and should only need an "ordniary" account on the VMware ESX host and browse permission within VirtualCenter.

When I use the "ordinary" account nothing is discovered, but when I use the root account everything is discovered.

My question....must I use the root account to run https://servername/mob

Best regards

Tobbe

Hi

This question has been here a long time! However as I hate to see questions unanswered here goes:

You need to create a role for ControlCenter with Browse Datastore permissions:

Open the VI client, when asked for the Server, specify the IP address of the ESX host. Then specify the root username and password.

IMPORTANT! Do not specify the hostname or IP address of the VirtualCenter host. You must log in to the ESX host directly.

3. Click Log In to proceed.

4. In the left-hand pane of the VI client window, click the name of the ESX host. In the right-hand pane, a number of tabs will be present.

5. Click on the tab named Users & Groups.

6. Right-click in an empty space and click Add... The Add New User dialog will appear.

7. Fill in the Login field with the eccuser account name.

8. Fill in the Password field with eccuser account password. Confirm the password in the Confirm field.

9. Choose whether or not you want this user to have shell access, and click the check-box if this is the case.

Note: Discovery from ControlCenter does not require shell access.

10. If desired, specify a Group. This step is not required.

11. Click OK when finished. The user is now in the Users list.

12. If running VMware Agent 6.0.0.0.343 or higher, create a ControlCenter role with Browse Datastore permissions using the procedure below. If running a lower version of VMware Agent, proceed to step 2.

13.

1. In the VI client window, click the Admin (or Administration) button at the top of the window

2. Below, right-click in the white space, and click Add...

3. In the Enter Name field, type ControlCenter

4. Below, expand Datastore, and click the checkbox next to Browse Datastore

5. Click OK to exit the Add Role window

14. Click the Inventory button at the top of the VI client window.

15. In the left-hand pane, right-click on the ESX host at the very top of the tree and click Add Permission... to launch the Assign Permissions dialog.

16. In the Users and Groups section on the left-hand side of the Assign Permissions window, click the Add... button to launch the Select Users dialog.

17. In the Select Users dialog, choose the user you just created from the list and click the Add button. Click OK when finished.

18. The user will now be in the Users and Groups list on the left-hand side of the window.

19.

o If VMware Agent is at version 6.0.0.0.343 or higher, under Assigned Role, select ControlCenter from the drop-down list

o If VMware Agent is at a lower version, under Assigned Role, select Administrator from the drop-down list

1. Ensure the Propagate to Child Objects checkbox is checked.

2. Click OK to commit the changes and close the dialog. You will return to the main VI client window.

3. To confirm the changes have been committed successfully, click the Admin (or Administration) button at the top of the window.
4. In the Roles tab, click Administrator or ControlCenter, depending upon the outcome of Step 3. Confirm that the user you have just created is now listed in the tree.
