Check out the new VMware Communities homepage!

What is it?
  • A single place to find the latest content from VMware Communities, VMworld.com, GoVirtual.org (the academic portal), and VIOPS (the operations portal).
  • A homepage to monitor your activity (be sure you're logged in)
  • A place to find the top community experts

This page will replace the Communities tab.

We'll roll it out quickly and continue to update and tune it based on your feedback. So reply here and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Robert

WOW! Looks great. The graphs are very nice, I like the watch list, quick and easy. Well done

Edit: Saw the Most Active Members, I like that better

I like how the communities sections includes the other sites in one pane - it would be nice down the road to have that as a consistent feature on all the sites.

I rarely use the home page myself but for a new user I'm not sure how much value the traffic report would provide. Having the user's watch list in that position may be more useful.

Will there be an option to hide / collapse items? I like the top 5 list - is that based on replies or views? Also with the Online Now section are there any plans to expand that (i.e. see who's online?)

Hi, Dave,

Yes. We would also like to implement SSO between VMware Communities and VMworld.com.
Dave.Mishchenko wrote: I rarely use the home page myself but for a new user I'm not sure how much value the traffic report would provide. Having the user's watch list in that position may be more useful.
I guess this depends on who you talk to; user preference. But we do have watch list directly beneath the stats in the center column. I think you next suggestion may address this.
Dave.Mishchenko wrote: Will there be an option to hide / collapse items?
In a future release, yes. This is, of course, just the first iteration. We wanted to replace the old, boring, static Community tab page as soon as possible. Now we have a foundation on which to build additional features based on what our community members want to see, and what is technically feasible. Expand/Collapse would also allow a user who doesn't care about traffic, for example, to quickly see the watch list beneath it.

Dave.Mishchenko wrote: I like the top 5 list - is that based on replies or views? Also with the Online Now section are there any plans to expand that (i.e. see who's online?)
The Top 5 list is based on views, I believe. Let me double-check that. Re: the Online Now section, what would you like to see? Who's Online is already a link below "Welcome, <name>." It takes you to the People-> Who's Online tab, since we can't possibly list everyone on this page.

Thanks for the great feedback!

Dave,

Today's Top 5 is based on the number of replies in the last 24 hours. We are hoping to capture the latest hot topics that users are writing about.

The option to hide / collapse items is definately on the list. Like Badsah said, this is only the first version.

Please submit more ideas and suggestions to this thread and help us mold the next version. We want this page to be very user centric, so your input is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Is this a Halloween joke ?
I just found the slot-machines ...
http://www.vmworld.com/community/virtualpavilion/casino/slot-machine
in the Virtual Pavilion Booth.

Pssst ... go to the piano - you will get 3 VCP-challenge answers as bonus

Not a joke, it's a feature. Have you discovered the bar yet? There are more surprises to discover.

Hey - there is no special reward when you take the place of the landlord behind the bar ?
Wouldn't serving drinks to the other guests should bring at least 4 and a half answers to the VCP- challenge ?

Cool stuff - the webdesigners must have had a lot of fun http://sanbarrow.com/gifs/crazy.gif

Wow - I just won a free t-shirt for VMworld 2008 !
This will be a very expensive site for your company ... I just strolled around there for 5 minutes and already won 3000 credits in the slotmachine and a t-shirt

So if I get 3 gold coins on the slots I win a free VC license? :)

In part I was wondering if the " VIOPS Members Online – 1 " link was meant to link to something besides the home page.

Would there be any plans to widen the page / columns? On my laptop about half the page (i.e. to the left and right of the content) is whitespace.

Very nice improvement, interesting to see which your posts and documents have been viewed most using those nice bar graphs :)
This looks much more professional. Kudos for all the good work!

Last night I experienced a complete browser crash (firefox 2.0017 on 2k3-sp2) while strolling around in the virtual Lounge. I'll try to find the site again and report it

Like the Dashboard setup. Like a DB it needs to allow you to move the widgets around on the page. Something like what What's Up Gold does.
