Hello Andreas,

Could you use the attach feature to provide the entire log file? What you posted is basically the "aftermath" of what went wrong. If I had the whole log file, then I may be able to figure out what happened.

Also, have you been able to do a VCB Restore before with converter? I just want to ensure that the UserName doing the restore has the correct permissions.

Your Virtual Centcer user (if applicable) needs the following privileges:
* Allow ReadOnly
* Disk Access
* Allow Virtual
* Machine Files
* Download
* Inventory of VMs

are you attempting to do the VCB restore and sending separate disks to different data stores?

also, can you confirm the version of VirtualCenter, VCB, and ESX that this is going to ... where your VCB proxy is ... and a directory listing for the full vm backup you are attempting to restore.

From what I can tell in the log file, this is the critical area of failure.

CloneTask::task{14} step "Cloning into disk PROSANGTEST TESTPROSANG/TESTPROSANG_1.vmdk" succeeded
CloneTask::task{14} step "Cloning into disk PROSANGTEST TESTPROSANG/TESTPROSANG_1.vmdk" destroyed
Cloning 2 disk of 9...
Error on logout (ignored): vim.fault.NotAuthenticated
CloneTask::task{14} step "cloning target disks" destroyed
Cloning failed!

Something happens between disk 0 and disk 1 of the backup when sending it to ESX directly. The most unique line in there is the "Error on logout (ignored)", and the rest is pretty generic. I spent some time googling around for VCB Restore and Converter problems, but haven't found much of a solution. Even in our bug listing, I have stuff from ESX 3.0.1 ... but that is ancient compared to what you are using.

I'm going to ask around the office and see what I can dig up for you.

Hi,
Can you tell me how long did it take for your first disk to clone? If it took more than 30 minutes for the 1st disk to clone, there was a problem where we would error out while trying to clone to 2nd disk (which seems to be the case with these logs). The workaround is to use "volume based cloning". You can perform volume based cloning by selecting the option for "Select volumes and resize to save or add space" on the "source data" page. You do not have to add/remove space which will enable you disk to look same as original.

Hope this helps.

Could you attach the logs for this case (unknown/missing disks)? If you select "disk based cloning", how many disks does it show? Another workaround would be to select only one disk while doing disk based cloning.

Aha...the VCB image that you are trying to restore is a Linux image. Current converter does not support volume based clones on Linux guests (no wonder it could not recognize the volumes).

Unfortunately this leaves few options:
1. Use converter built into WS 6.5
2. Use converter built into VC 2.5 U3
3. (This is slightly complex) Use converter 3.0.3 but select only one disk to clone at a time, this will let you clone all the VMDKs from source to destination but as part of separate VMs. Then you can select one of the VMs and "add disks"->"use existing vmdks"->point them to the converter VMDKs. Finally remove the extra VMs.
4. Copy the VMDKs manually to destination. Then create a VM using these VMDKs.

In case it was a timeout problem for the data connection, you can change the SOAP timeout by doing the following from an SSH session to ESX, and then retry the restore.

Edit the file /etc/vmware/hosted/config.xml in the destination ESX, inserted the below line in between <vmcore> tag.
<soap>
<sessionTimeout>2</sessionTimeout>
</soap>

Then restart the the service mgmt-vmware.

I would be curious to know if disk 2 converts okay by itself. I'm still researching this.
