My host is Gentoo Linux 2.6.25 and guest is Windows XP Professional. I'm running VMware Workstation 6.5.0. When I try to write to the DVD-RW on the guest, I get an error message: "That drive is read-only." It's read-write on the host, Gentoo Linux.

How can I write to it under the guest? I've attached the .vmx file. Thanks.

This must be a culprit:

ide1:0.present = "TRUE"
ide1:0.fileName = "/dev/sr0"
ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

Please, attach your DVD drive as a /dev/sdX device.

How do I attach it? Do I edit the .vmx file by hand? If so, what do I change?

Power off guest, go to Guest settings, select you CD/DVD drive, hit "Advanced settings" and change Virtual Device Node from IDE to SCSI.

My first answer was ... a bit incorrect. ;-)

I edited the .vmx file by hand by commenting out these lines:

#ide1:0.present = "FALSE"
#ide1:0.fileName = "/dev/sr0"
#ide1:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

and changing one of these lines:


scsi0:1.present = "TRUE"
scsi0:1.fileName = "/dev/scd0"
#scsi0:1.deviceType = "scsi-cdrom"
scsi0:1.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"
scsi0:1.startConnected = "TRUE"
