I set up VMware server 2 on a windows XP machine with SP3 and had it all running fine. I installed Vista to run as a client and created a desktop shortcut. Then shut dowm my now I cannot get it to run I just get the following error message:

"Error opening the remote virtual machine <hostname>:8333\16:
A connection to the host could not be established."

When I try to connect to theVMWare Server Home Page I get the following Internet Explorer error:

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

It seems a numebr of people are having similar problems but I cannot find any solutions to my problem.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Nik

Adrok,

Considering the first error: Was this a certificate error? If so, go ahead to the Web site and install the certificate.

Second: I think no one knows what this error means. Please post the target information from the Properties of your non-working short cut. Be sure to remove any personal data. Here's mine, with the closing ] changed to ) to prevent the forum from messing it up: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMware\VMware Remote Console Plug-in\vmware-vmrc.exe" -h xxxx -u xxxx -p xxxx -X "[standard) XP Pro x64 Test System/XP Pro x64 Test System.vmx" . The -X opens the console full screen (takes a few seconds).

Enjoy, John.

You did specify server:8333 in the IP address/Name field in the VI Client?

i had the same problem: just installed vmware server 2.0 (on xp pro sp3) and created a new virtual machine. powered it on and entered the console, i got this error-message (although when i created adesktop shortcut and tried to start the virtual machine from there)

solution:

select your virtual machine, go to permissons-tab. there's one permission defined for the admin-group on the host.

creating a new permission for the user i currently used to log on the host and the vmware server as an admin with all privileges solved the problem.

not sure why it didn't worked without this explicit permission, because the user i used is in the host admin-group and i used this one to install the server... any idea?

hope this helps someone else because i haven't seen this hint anywhere, but many requests for help on this error :)

Creating a new permission also doesn't permanently solve the problem in my installation ...

I have the same problem with the latest VMware Server 2 version on Windows 7 x64.

I've reinstalled it many times, and it doesn't help.

Will try to downgrade to the previous version, if it will not help - will go to Virtualbox..

Downgrading didn' help, and no one knows how to solve the issue.

Gone to Virtualbox. :(
