Hello, few weeks ago I installed the VMware Server 2 RC2 on my Vista Ultimate x64 and used the serial that I was issued. Now today I noticed VMware released the final version of VMware Server 2.0 so I got a new serial with it. Do I need to use the new serial or can I use the older one? Because I cant replace it, I get this error below:
The server response included one or more errors.

emm1, all Server 2 Beta and RC customers used a the same two serial numbers. You will need to use a new serial number for Server 2 GA release- you should have been prompted to specify the number of serial numbers/license keys that you want when you downloaded the GA version. You should have been provided 2 licenses/keys - one for Linux hosts and one for Windows hosts. Make sure you are cut and pasting the correct one. If you are unsure, head back to
https://www.vmware.com/freedownload/login.php?product=server20
and use the same email address that you used to register to originally download Server 2.0 GA. It should list out the serial numbers/license keys that were provided to you.
I try to use the new serial number from Downloadpage, but I get this error:
The server response included one or more errors.

I installed GA over RC2, and the install did not ask for a new serial. Will I have a problem if I do not install the new serial, if so, how do I do it?
Paul,
Hmm, maybe you had a Server 1.0.x license on the host? Server 2.0 is backwards compatible with Server 1.0.x licenses.
This is what happened to me, when I upgraded from 2.0 RC2 to 2.0.0 Final it did not prompt me to enter new serial number.
I ended up by deinstalling the product, removing the key when it asked me, reboot and reinstalled it using the new serial key.
It's never had server 1.0 installed. I can't remember which server 2 I started on, but don't think I've ever had to enter a key when upgrading. I do remember it didn't want a new key to go from RC1 to RC2. The host is windows vista ultimate 64.
You can also reenter the serial number using via VI Web Access -> Application -> Enter Serial Number
That did not work, thats why I posted here in the first place. ![]()
As part of the download, you should have been provisioned new serial numbers for Server 2.0 GA. Probably best to use these assigned serial numbers - we did not change the backend engine provisioning our license keys for Server (1 and 2) but I am not sure where the Beta/RC serial numbers originated from. You can reenter serial number via Web Access/Application.
Thanks
That did not work,
using VI Web Access -> Application -> Enter Serial Number

The same by using VMware Infrastructure-Client
People here seem to be missing this point.....
The pattern -
VI Web Access -> Application -> Enter Serial Number
DOES NOT WORK if you have left an older SN in the registry.
This is a bug and needs to be addressed.
For those who have hit this error -
InvalidLicense: The uploaded license content was not valid.
has anyone found completely uninstalling and reinstalling to solve the problem?
I've intsalled and reinstalled server multiple times and I still cant get this to work because of the lisence key. I've looked everywhere and I've yet to come across a solution other than reinstall.
All, it looks like something broke along the way...Thanks for finding this. I was able to reproduce this in-house.
deinstalling the product,
removing the key when it asked me,
reboot,
* reinstalled it and using the new serial key,
works fine.
