Audio Driver Bug in VMWare Fusion 2.0 posted: Sep 23, 2008 4:19 PM

There is an audio bug in Fusion 2.0 (full release). After upgrading to the 2.0 version from the latest 1.x (I never tried the beta), I went to Windows Update to check for new software.

Windows XP Pro SP3, Boot Camp partition

When I visited there, I was told that there is a new driver for the Sound card, the Creative AudioPCI ES1371,ES1373 (WDM). So I let Windows install it.

This completely disabled the sound coming from Windows. I looked at the Sounds and Audio Device Properties in the VM, and it indicated on the Volume tab that there were no audio devices. The speaker icon was also missing in the Windows taskbar. Oddly enough, Windows really thought that my audio hardware was working properly.

I noticed the file date was 3/18/2008 for the new driver, and it was version 6.0.0.0. After fiddling with a few things, here is how I fixed it:

I went into Device Manager and selected the Creative device. I then chose the driver tab and chose update driver. I told it to install advanced, and "don't search. I will chose the driver to install."

On the next page, there were two (identical) drivers listed. The bottom one is the old one. So I selected the bottom file, and now audio works!

I am back to Driver date: 7/1/2001 and Version 5.1.2535.0 (the original). I guess the latest Creative Labs driver won't work with VM Ware.

When in doubt, look for the es1371mp.sys file in your system directories if you get stuck and you need to know where Windows sticks their unused driver files.

But since VMWare chose to use this as their virtual hardware, it would be nice if it was compatible with the real one.

Also, I noticed that essentially everything VMWare now installs is a USB device listed under the "safely remove hardware" object. Not too useful. Perhaps they could make all of those things stop appearing there. It doesn't seem like it is toouseful to ever remove any of those USB devices, as it seems to confuse Fusion if not Windows.

I have a similar problem with the sound driver not recording through the microphone. I tried rolling back to the previous driver, as you (uruiamme) suggested. It didn't work for me. You can see the details of my roll back at this thread: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1058126#1058126

Note that there are differences between my configuration and yours, as noted in the thread referred to, above.

Cheers,

Interesting, I've filed bug 331077 to track this.

Is this 32-bit XP or 64-bit XP?

I'm running Vista Business 64-bit and I get no sound. I have removed and reinstalled the driver, did the update thing, and still no go. Everything shows in both VMWare and Vista that sound is working, but no sound from the Vista side. Any clues? The Vista install is new with all SPs and updates applied.

The WIndows XP SP3 ESS driver (which I think I got from Windows Updates within the last month or two) caused two of my VMs to blue screen during their upgrade. Ultimately I was able to manually install Tools and all three of my VMs have working sound now.

Hello,

right today I've hit the very same bug (I don't mean the blue screen, I just mean sound not working) but I can't find yet a way out. In my case I haven't upgraded from Fusion 1.x, it was a fresh VM running Windows XP SP3 in Fusion 2.0.1.

Everything worked fine for a few times, but then the default Creative PCI sound card stopped working. My USB Plantronics headset works fine though.

I also have two driver entries in the "compatible drivers" window, but both of them seem to point to version 5.1.2535.0. I've tried selecting one or the other but the version is still the same. I've also tried removing the device and adding it back, both through the device manager and through the VM settings to no avail.

Is there anything else I can try in your opinion?

Thanks a lot in advance for your support and best regards,
Giovanni

Hello,

restarting the actual Mac Pro was the final solution... and I have no idea why!

I have an iMac 24" Intel Core2 Duo running 10.5.8 with 4GB of RAM (2GB allocated to VMWare Fusion), and I am getting no sound at all from the PC. (Windows XP Pro, lastest version/updates) When I first installed Fusion, the sound used to work fine, but after one of the updates, (it was either 2.0.4 or 2.0.5), the sound has never worked since.

I have tried everything I can think of, including removing the sound device in VMWare Fusion settings, and then adding it again, as recommended in the tips on this website. Windows does not detect a problem. I have spent WEEKS and WEEKS trying to correct this issue, and I have pulled every last hair on my head in the process. I have tried installing and uninstalling old and new sound drivers from many sources, and am now using the version that someone on here recommended (Driver date: 7/1/2001 and Version 5.1.2535.0), but this still has not fixed my sound problem.

It sounds like many other people are having this problem, so why so little info from VMWare about it?

Anyone have any suggestions? Help I need sound!
