You might try re-starting the mgmt-vmware service on the ESX host. Also if you were using ntp make sure the service is stopped, service ntpd stop

Discovered the workaround by accident, glad to see a post on the date change up on this board.

Well on the server I flipped the date back on and then powered on etc it is reporting all of its VMs fine. The only difference for us is that I flipped it back did what I needed to and then brought it back to the correct date.

Yup, I confirm this bug this morning. I have not disabled NTP, I only date back the ESXi Server if I need to reboot or poweron a VM.
After a while the NTP daemon corrects the date to current date and everything runs normal again.

I hope there is no Time & Attendance or Industrial Timerelated Application running on ESX and you VM guys can fix
this problem quickly, because I guess the major pain comes from the ESX 3.5-U2 Customer base.

Can a moderator pin this thread as critical for everyone?

Be extremely careful with altering date/time!!!

Since its good practice so far - most of the vm's synchronize their time with the esx host. And they do this also backwards as someone experienced.

Having wrong time can be disastrous to the whole domain and also to member servers than can get disconnected from the domain.

Solution?

Since the patch will probably need maintenance mode you will have to evacuate all you vm's from the esx. But how should this be possible with the problem. At the end I guess you will have 2 opportunities:

Power off vm's, apply patch, power on. - temporary install a new esx within your cluster with a patch for the problem and use it as a VMotion target for the others.

Regards

Spex

As long as you dont have vmware tools to sync time with host it is ok to change the date on the ESX ? I have a mail server running on an update 2 machine, and I cant even vmotion it away! I dont want to mess up time settings on it..

thanks for letting us know. I just reversed time (it feels cool to say that) on our servers and it worked.

I second the view of vmware really dropping the ball with the 3.5 release of ESX. If this is as big of an issue as it looks I wonder if the stock price will take another hit today in the US?? Probably not because of this, but it certainly doesnt help the situation.

Thanks for the post mattjk.

I was awoken this am by one of my collegues who was onsite doing p2v migration work out of hours for a client. Ran into this very issue and spent hours trying to troubleshoot!! In the end we had to bring back up all old physical servers. Customer NOT a happy camper!!!

Vmware need to come out with a pretty damn good explanation for this serious "TIME BOMB!". I have lost all faith now in Vmware's QA team.

So I'm guessing this breaks HA big time?

If a host goes down those VMs are lost until the fix is available? You would have to rebuild the host with Update 1 to get the VMs back.

Here's hoping the work experience kid doesn't trip over the power cables in the next 24hrs.

Also -- Has anyone else noticed that Update 2 hosts are showing as non-compliant. They are showing as needing Update 1 to be installed! This only happened in the last few hours as far as i can tell.

Thanks Mattjk, you did a good job and being the pioneer of the ESX bug tester.:x

I downloaded the ESX3.5U2 release ISO yesterday and just planned to upgrade it this morining.

And unfortunatelly the bug annoying me for troubleshooting for more than 2 hours until my teamates searched the thread here.:_|

Really feel disappointed and next time I should not upgrade the new release and wait for at least 1 month to evaluate...

Even the problem can be bypassed, but we are stilling waiting for the new releases.:|

Now all the upgrade plan of ESX postponed... require to coordinate for the new time slot. :-(

Jeez... VMware are becoming the new Microsoft in more ways than one, and I'm not talking about their balance sheet. Not that I would ever rollout anything to production within 2 weeks of it's GA mind you..
