dd'ing the image directly to the drive will work, but you will lose
anything else you may have on that device.

OK, so at the end I guess my CD was bad, as it was not completing the ESXi boot.
I was actually using a CDRW that I got from my IT, so when I tried with a regular CDR, it worked all fine.

So, unless other say otherwise, ESXi 3.5 Update 2 works with Dell PowerEdge SC1425.

It did recognize my disks and I was able to configure my datastores.

Go ahead and add this system to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware_ESX_Server(Whitebox_HCL)
so that others will know it works. I think we also have a list on
the communities website as well. I'm glad it worked out for you.

What sort of storage controller does the VI client show your server as having?

On my SC1425 the VI client shows the following for storage controllers

82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller

--> vmhba1 SCSI
--> vmhba32 SCSI

82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller

--> vmhba0 Block SCSI

Hello

I just got SC1425 to put ESXi on, but I'm getting Panic Error right after the install starts and says that can't read the .tgz file.

Could this be due to the fact the mobo has only CERC Sata controller?

I was hoping I can use this server but it looks like having more problems again

Any advice will be very apreciated
