I installed VMware-Server 2.0 RC1 yesterday, and it was working fine.

Then Firefox upgraded it's self t V3.0.1 and now I get the following error.

"VMware Remote Console Plug-in 2.5.0.100265 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0.1"

Any ideas on how to get around this?

Wilbur

Downgrade to firefox 3.0 as a short term solution.

It looks like you're running Linux on the client. I'll assume that's what your server is as well.

On the server-side, go to (adjust as necessary):
/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-xxxx/webapps/ui/plugin/

There, you'll find several .xpi packages. Unzip the one you want to a temporary directory:

$ mkdir /tmp/xpi-out && cd /tmp/xpi-out
$ unzip /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/ui/plugin/vmware-vmrc-linux-x86.xpi

Edit the install.rdf file in the unzipped output, and change the compatibility (there's a field that says 3.0.0., you should change that to 3.0. - or 3.0.1.*).

Then zip up the file again and replace the original (making a backup first):
$ cp /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/ui/plugin/vmware-vmrc-linux-x86.xpi \
/usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/ui/plugin/vmware-vmrc-linux-x86.xpi.bak
$ zip -r /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/ui/plugin/vmware-vmrc-linux-x86.xpi *

That should do the trick. I'll try to verify this properly when I get in to work tomorrow.

Actually, I am running windows XP on the client, and Ubuntu Hardy x86_64 on the server, but it looks like your solution should work for either.

I will go back to V3.0.1 and try your solution.

I verified this and fixed it (our extension now claims compatibility with Firefox 3.*). The workaround I described above is valid for any of the XPI packages as well.

It looks like Firefox 3.0.1 will ship out on Wednesday, so you may have to use the workaround for a little while until the next Server build comes out.

I tried it and it worked for me as well.

I am running 64-bit linux, (Ubuntu Hardy x86_64) so I had to replace the x86 with x64

I am another ubuntu user with one toe in the blood of the bleeding edge ;-))

I can confirm the solution for Ubuntu 8.04.1+proposed-upgrades, firefox 3.0.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-openvz.

Would it be ok (legally!) to make the patches *.xpi files downloadable by the public, i.e. "redistribute" them!?

Are you kidding? FF 301 is a security bugfix!

If Vmware isnt't able to deliver a functional remote console it is simply unusable. The webui is a nightmare causing a lot of problems.

I can't understand why the interface of GSX 1.0 is gone. Why scaring custumers?

Regards

Paul

Old design of Server 1.0.x is shelved.
New design of Server 2.0 was based on common elements with VI so it would have similar structure and management.

Is that scary? Customers of what? GSX?

I'd more likely downgrade VM-Server ;)
another sollution could be, to adjust the firefox-config.
Just to let you know - my VM isn't working, so I did not check this out, yet ;) Be careful, you can mess up your FF completely.
  • Type "about-config" to the adressbar and READ the warning.
  • rightclick in the body => new => boolean
  • create a value called "extensions.checkCompatibility" and set it to false.
  • create another value called "extensions.checkUpdateSecurity" and also setit to false.
  • restart firefox and see if it works, now. Be careful - incompatible addons can have unwanted sideeffects.

No guarantee for anything on this workaround.
Good luck!

#my aunt edit says my ie should work - so i will check this out and let you know.

Jesus do NOT disable the check in firefox for ALL extensions
Why do you not install https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/6543 and click simply on "Make Compatible"?

ok, this seems to work.

I had any problems while testing:

  • VM-Server cannot be installed within a virtual machine.

  • Opening an instance of my VM within the same VM resulted in cascading the machine ....so chose another virtual machine to test this ;)

But: The add-in could get installed by opening the vm-console and click in the body.

Please remember: Apply these changes only on your own risk!

I didn't know that one. Probably the better workaround.
