RC1 install fails on XP x64. posted: Jul 3, 2008 12:28 PM

I attempted to install VMware Server 2.0 RC1, without luck. Even when I try 'Run As', I get the message about 'system administrator has set policies that prevent the installation'. I tried in Safe Mode on the Administrator account and received a message about the 'MS Runtime DLL installer failed to complete'. I hope someone can help.

Thanks, John.

Unless you've specifically set your group policy to disallow it, your Windows Installer might be out of wack.

You could try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Also you might try:

1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.
2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.

Those are just the first couple of hits from google.

johnhc,

I just recently installed 2.0 RC1 on my Win XP Pro x64 system. I had an error during the uninstall of the previously installed 1.0.6, then tried again with the 2.0 and it installed correctly. Unfortunately, I've had two different Win XP Pro 32bit VM's get corrupted NTFS drives and destroyed. The second was one that I just built tonight from scratch.

I'm going to go back to 1.0.6 for now.

I was having the same problem trying to install Server 2 RC1 on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, with sp2 and 24gb of ram. I found this MS article and download: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925336

The VMware install works after applying the patch, but the article says there is no patch for XP.
