just completed that upgrade myself on ubuntu server.

shutdown my vm's (and moved them)
ran vmware-unistall.pl
removed /etc/vmware, /var/lib/vmware etc because I'm paranoid
rebooted just for fun
extracted archive
ran vmware-install.pl
accepted the defaults
put myself back in authorization.xml
put one of my vm's back
connected to web
imported it
started it

life is good...so far.

On my Fedora 9 x86_64 machine the upgrade worked like a charme

* Suspend of all VMs

  • service vmware stop
  • killall on the last running provesses
  • Upgrade via local yum-repo (rpm)
  • vmware-config.pl
  • Waking up the vms and updating the vmware-tools in the guests

BTW: Now it seems that after "service vmware stop" there are no longer running processes, this was on my machine a beta-problem

I upgraded two servers; one with debian 4 rc3 and one clarkconnect (centos 4) without any issues. I used the .tar.gz version on both servers.

I just powered down all the vm's and ran the installer and it worked like a charm.

you need to upgrade Vi-client as well

As above I shut my vm's down, ran the installer and all was well. (using debian etch , x86_64 version, tarball install)

The only thing to note was that the previous version of Virtual Infrastructure Client that I used to use to manage my vmware-server no longer works properly with RC1. (most notable being that the Configuration tab was missing from the host entry)

I had to update to the new version (version 2.5.0 build 101565) which is included in the distro (my tarball install placed it in /usr/lib/vmware/hostd/docroot/client/VMware-viclient.exe). After that things are looking good.

It doesn't matter which VIC do you use, it is still recommended to use Web UI, as VIC is not supported at this moment and has issues.

I admit I havent tried the web UI on RC1 but the version that came with Beta I found to be slow and unstable hence I switched to the fat client version. I havent had any issues using VIC with either Beta or RC1, apart from having to upgrade as detailed above.

Most of them I can, but for some reason there were a couple that VIC refused to edit. I havent been able to figure out what the difference is. I found the workaround was to use the Web UI to edit them, then save them with no changes and VIC can be used again.

VIC cannot work with VMware Hardware type higher than 4.
