What is the SATA controller, if it is a SAS/SATA controller then maybe. have you checked the I/O HCL also check out the community lists for those it works but its not supported items.

You'll potentially have a problem getting ESX to recognize the SATA controller that the server comes with. Do you know the specific model of controller that you would get? Ideally, the controller would be listed here - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_io_guide.pdf and if you want a supported system you'll want to stick with this list - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_systems_guide.pdf. If you're just looking for a test system, then you might want to check out this list - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3.5/Whiteboxes_SATA_Controllers_for_ESX_3.5_3i.htm.

It use the nvidia 2200 pro chipset which does not seem to be on the list of sata controllers. You would need to upgrade to the sas6/ir card in the T105. You could get that system new and not refurb for $1250 or so on dell's website right now.

Hi,
The T105 is not supported with the SATA-controller, as already mentioned by f5alcon. I haven't found anything about the SATA controller chip (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pet105/en/index.htm), nevertheless it might work (<> supported!) with ESX3.5 because of the compatibility with a supported SATA-chip (see answer of Dave.Mishchenko). If you really want to buy this system for a dev environment, do it. If it doesn't work with the sata controller just buy a cheap, compatible SATA controller card and that's it.
With ESX3.0x it will definitely not work.

Your 2GB memory is the limiting factor not the proc.

Do you have a DHCP server available? If not then you'll need to manually assign an IP address. I have an install video for ESXi here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESX_3i_install/ESX_3i_install.html - take a look about 1 minutes and 50 seconds into it. Does the NIC LEDs show a connection to the network?

If you login at the console and go to Configure Management Network and select Network Adapters - does it show vmnic0? You might also want to go to View System Logs and look at messages. You can also do the following to see what ESXi is able to see

1) At the console press ALT-F1
2) Type in unsupported and hit enter
3) You'll get a warning about this be unsupported, etc. Enter the password for root and continue.
4) Enter the command lspci and you'll get the output for what hardware the system has. Could you post that output?

it is booting to the USB key right? also 3i has a more limited compatibility then full 3.5, the broadcom nic is compatible with normal 3.5 because it works on my 1900 and its the same nic, you may have an issue with the storage controller because you didnt get a sas5/ir or perc5i, which we warned you about before you bought it.
