Windows Server 2008 doesn't work with the deploy.cab file anymore, sysprep now is already included in the OS and it also doesn't use inf files anymore, but instead uses xml files.

Read http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci1267878,00.html for more info, and how to go about it.

Hope this helps !

Download and install the 2003 SP2 Sysprep hotfix : KB Article ID 926028. Do this on my VC 2.5 server.

  1. Extract c:\windows\system32\deploy.cab to C:\<ALLUSERSPROFILE>\Application Data\Vmware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep\svr2003\
  2. You should now have the option within VirtualCenter to customize a 2003 SP2 template.

As of right now, VMware does not fully supported Windows 2008/customization but if you can try the back door option it will work just fine. During virtual machine creation, just choose Windows Vista option and than switch it back to Windows 2008 on the settings. This should work fine give it a shot.

the location to place your sysprep file on a 2008 vCenter server is

C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep
