VMWare UUID

Hi,

I have a set of physical machines with VMware running on it. The install paths of virtual machines on those physical machines are the same and I also know the UUID of the physical machine from SMBIOS.

As per the VMware documentation site, "The UUID is based on the physical computer's identifier and the path to the virtual machine's configuration file. This UUID is generated when you power on or reset the virtual machine. As long as you do not move or copy the virtual machine to another location, the UUID remains constant."

Can you please let me know, how exactly is the UUID for the virtual machine is generated? This would help me to map of virtual machines and physical machines.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Thanks,

-Mahesh.

Hello,

Determining the exact process is subject to the availability of the VMware source code itself and is not likely going to happen publicly. But for the most part VMware is using the method in the following RFC
