Through the ESX command line (not VIC), how can I hot plug a vmdk file to a running Guest OS without shutting it down? Right now my only solution is to manually add scsix:y entries into the .vmx configuration files and then power cycling the guests so that they can see the new disks.

If the VIClient can do it, there must be a way to do it in the console.

any help is greatly appreciated,

Look http://www.rtfm-ed.eu/docs/vmwdocs/esx3.x-vc2.x-serviceconsole-guide.pdf on page 43.

VM must be powered off, but you can try with a vm up and running.
